12 August 2016 Asia

A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was 535km (330 miles) southeast of Vanuatu island.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a local tsunami warning for areas close to the earthquake, though this was later cancelled.

It was 100 KM (~62 miles) east of New Caledonia. A strong aftershock, >6, struck due south of Fiji Island. Both were shallow.

Both are 330 miles south of Vanuatu.
