Trump victory stirs concerns in Tijuana

From the humblest to the most influential, Tijuana’s residents wondered anxiously Wednesday about the effects of a Donald Trump presidency on the region’s future.

As newspapers, television broadcasts and radio programs led with the news of Trump’s Tuesday triumph, some residents worried that growing numbers of U.S. deportees could end up stranded on the city’s streets. Others feared a weakening peso — which fell to a record low after Trump’s election — may make U.S. goods out of reach.

“Right now, there’s not much effect, but just wait until el güero, the blond guy, takes office,” said Silvestre Espinosa, a 65-year-old merchant interviewed in San Ysidro as he prepared to walk back to Tijuana after a day of shopping. “That’s when things are going to get serious.”

Mexicans at all levels have been concerned for months about the prospect of a Trump victory, alarmed about his campaign statements promoting the construction of a continuous wall on the Mexican border, the re-negotiation or cancellation of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the creation of a special deportation task force.
