Russia and America "clashed" in Manchuria in the 1890s.

By clash, I mean that America supported the open door policy while Russia wanted to keep other nations out of an area they controlled through a military occupation. This would often be the Russian way because they generally wanted a centralized government that couldn't compete with the West's open system--so they wanted to close out the West.

Japan too wanted an open door policy in Manchuria. In fact Russia and Japan fought a war in 1904 in which the Japanese famously sank the Russian navy. In the end our Teddy Roosevelt mediated a peace treaty for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The point is, that America and Russia clashed before Russia became communist. In his book, America, Russia and the Cold War, Walter Lafebre used this idea to show that America and Russia were destined to clash because they were both expansionist powers. The orthodox view of the Cold War is that Russia, as a communist country, wanted to control the world and America stepped up to stop them. In histiography, this is called Revisionist History. Many people would get out the garlic, silver crosses and other ornaments to protect from Revisionist History as if it were a vampire. But Revisionist History is a re-interpretation of history after new facts come out or after a period of time. There's nothing really bad about Revisionist History.

So what about now? Many media sources point to Putin's vindictive goals against Hillary Clinton for her possible push against him politically in Russia. Additionally, Obama put crippling sanctions on Russia after Russia's "expansion" into Crimea and Ukraine. Once again the two nations are clashing over expansion.
