Russia's scramble for influence in Africa catches western officials off-guard

Kremlin officials are offering arms and military services deals in exchange for diplomatic support and mineral extraction contracts

Russia is engaged in a frantic new scramble for influence in Africa, which is being spearheaded by a rash of military cooperation and arms deals signed across the continent in 2018.

The most recent – an agreement for a planned Russian logistics base in Eritrea, which would give it access to the Red Sea – was announced in early September after nine months that have seen Kremlin officials crisscross from the Horn to the Great Lakes and southern Africa.

The pace of Russia’s renewed intervention has raised fears over the human rights and security implications of selling arms to regimes that are weak or in conflict, particularly as the US has signalled its own plans to withdraw troops and close missions.

Scrutiny was heightened last month following the murder of three Russian journalists in Central African Republic while they were investigating the activities of the controversial Russian military services firm Wagner.

If they can get obsequious Trump to do things they want, all the better, but I think they were most interested in creating some openings for themselves by creating chaos here.

what's going on, other than the obvious play for all of their mineral riches that they have on this continent.

Africa is a country that if they ever got it together and became a United Country, they would quickly become a world economic superpower. Africa is sitting on more wealth in natural resources then just about any other country. Oil, Minerals, Gold, Silver, Platinum, diamonds.. ect..ect... the list is pretty extensive.

However, they are divided and in seemingly constant conflict.

It's a shame our current President believes Africa is a "Shithole" country. It is actually a country of vast wealth.

Personally I thought you were driving at another point about how maybe what they just need is some different type of leadership?

Is there something inherent about the people there that makes it difficult for them to rape and plunder and use all the natural beauty?

Africa is basically divided.... tribalism, many don't get along with each other and haven't for hundred of years... my point was... if they were to all band together and become a united Africa, where the countries became like states as we have in America.

A united Africa would be an economic powerhouse.

I don't forsee it happening in my lifetime, but it's a theoretical thought.
