Trump cuts foreign aid, threatens to close Mexico border

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Threatening drastic action against Mexico, President Donald Trump declared he is likely to shut down America’s southern border next week unless Mexican authorities immediately halt all illegal immigration. The president, who also cut U.S. aid to three Central American nations whose citizens are fleeing north, emphasized “I am not kidding around” about closing the border, even though such a severe move could hit the economies of both countries.

“It could mean all trade” with Mexico, Trump said when questioned on Friday by reporters in Florida. “We will close it for a long time.”

Though Trump has previously threatened to close the border and has not followed through, his administration moved to cut direct aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. The State Department said in a statement that it will suspend 2017 and 2018 payments to the trio of nations that have been home to some of the migrant caravans that have marched through Mexico to the U.S. border.

A substantial closure could have an especially heavy impact on cross-border communities from San Diego to South Texas, as well as supermarkets that sell Mexican produce, factories that rely on imported parts, and other businesses across the U.S.

The U.S. and Mexico trade about $1.7 billion in goods daily, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which said closing the border would be “an unmitigated economic debacle” that would threaten 5 million American jobs.

Now it's all Mexico's fault. It never occurs to him to address the CAUSES of why people are fleeing north. Cutting foreign aid, wow that will fix the problem, right? The election cannot get here soon enough for me. Unfortunately there will be a lot more disgusting and completely stupid acting out and infinite incompetence between now and then.

the Mueller investigation he is riding high, planning on energizing his base by continuing to "fulfill the promises" be made during the 2016 campaign. He's planning on (the courts) ridding him of the ACA and hopes that by provoking crises with Central America that he can demonstrate that the "crisis" on the border is real. He's a cynical son of a bitch.

The White House on Sunday doubled down on President Donald Trump's decision to cut off aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, saying the small Central American nations were not doing enough to stop the flow of migrants to the US.

In an appearance for television broadcaster CNN on Sunday, White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney questioned the efficacy of the aid program. "If it's working so well, why are the people still coming? Why are these historic numbers — again, 100,000 people will cross the border this month alone," Mulvaney said.

"It's not working well enough to help us solve our border crisis. And that's what the president's focused on," he concluded.

Critics have warned that cuts to US assistance could worsen conditions and possibly increase the migrant flow.

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin defended the aid's impact and its goal. "We need to focus on what's happening in Central America where three countries are disassembling before our eyes and people are desperately coming to the United States," he said. "The president cutting off aid to these countries will not solve this problem," Durbin added.

In a tweet on Sunday, the US president blamed Democrats for what he called "a ridiculous asylum system and major loopholes to remain as a mainstay of our immigration system."

Even in the brand stores, lot of the produce sold right now comes from Mexico and places further south.
