Russia to Seek 10 Years in Prison for Opposition Activist

MOSCOW — Dec 19, 2014, 9:27 AM ET
By NATALIYA VASILYEVA Associated Press

Russian prosecutors on Friday demanded that the nation's most prominent opposition leader be sentenced to 10 years in prison on allegations of fraud, which he rejected as a punishment for his political activities.

In their closing arguments in a Moscow courthouse, prosecutors asked a judge to convict Alexei Navalny and imprison him for nine years, with an additional year added because of a prior conviction.

Navalny rejected the charges as baseless and vowed to continue to defy President Vladimir Putin's rule. He blamed the government for this week's ruble collapse and other economic woes, saying that "it's robbing all of us every day."

Navalny, along with his brother Oleg, is on trial for allegedly defrauding a French cosmetics company in a criminal case in which no injured party has stepped forward. The prosecutors demanded that Navalny's brother be imprisoned for eight years.
