US inching toward sending arms to Ukraine

The failure of a European-brokered ceasefire to put an end to the fighting in eastern Ukraine is likely to increase pressure on President Barack Obama to send weapons to Ukraine’s government despite objections by Germany and other key European allies.

Any decision to send more sophisticated weaponry to Ukraine will require greater collaboration between the U.S. and Ukraine to ensure troops can manage those systems in the field.

What would such a move mean for U.S. troops?

“I think they have several options. They could send troops to Ukraine to have U.S. forces involved, or they could bring Ukraine’s (troops) back to the U.S. to train on those systems,” said Sim Tack, a military analyst with the Texas-based intelligence and advisory firm STRATFOR.

Washington (AFP) - The US military has delivered three radars to Ukraine designed to detect incoming mortar fire, the Pentagon said Friday, amid appeals from Kiev for Washington to send weapons to help fight pro-Russian rebels.

The counter-mortar radar systems were flown to Ukraine in a C-17 cargo plane that accompanied US Vice President Joe Biden, who paid a visit to Kiev on the first anniversary of protests that unleashed a year of upheaval.

A total of 20 counter-mortar radar systems were due to be delivered over the next several weeks, and Ukrainian troops would undergo training on the radars starting in mid-December, Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steven Warren said.

The radars detect incoming mortar rounds and then calculate the origin of the mortar fire. The systems can be hooked up to mortar or artillery batteries which then return fire.

Russia has supplied many tanks and APC's to the east of Ukraine via the unmonitored border. They have also had a military exercise along the Ukrainian border for a year, Do you think they should stop that exercise?

Washington. Speaking at a conference dedicated to the situation in the Ukrainian city of Debaltseve former NATO commander Wesley Clark said Ukraine’s army could have successfully protected the strategic settlement if it had been provided with modern American or other western arms and weapons, TASS reported.
In his words, the lack of modern anti-tank systems is the major reason for the defeat of the Ukrainian government forces.
