Ukraine coal workers hold pickets in capital

KIEV, Ukraine — Hundreds of coal workers are marching through Ukraine’s capital in a call for authorities to stop buying fuel from abroad and to guarantee a moratorium on mine closures.

The miners used sticks to bang on helmets and waved flags Thursday as they paraded from government headquarters to the coal and energy ministry, where dozens of policemen were guarding the building.

War against Russian-backed separatists in the east, where Ukraine’s most productive coal mines are located, forced the government over the winter to seek supplies from overseas providers.

Participants in the Kiev rally, many of them from eastern regions of Ukraine, demanded the resignation of the energy and coal minister. The minister had been due to travel to the United States, but that trip has been cancelled.

Hundreds of U.S. paratroopers have started training national guard units in Ukraine in addition to the US$75 million in military aid from Washington.

A crowd of demonstrators gathered at the U.S. embassy in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, protesting against Washington's interference in the country's internal affairs, local press reported Thursday.

At least 500 people attended the rally chanting slogans against controversial measures including the appointment of foreigners including a former U.S. state department official to senior position in Ukraine's new government, which protestors say is as a result of following instructions from the White House.

Demonstrators say U.S. interference has led to more violence, and also condemned the fact that hundreds of U.S. paratroopers have started training national guard units in Ukraine.
