JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday there was still time to stop an Iranian agreement with world powers that he says would give Tehran nuclear arms.
"It's still not too late to retract the plan that gives Iran an agreement which will pave it a road to a nuclear weapon," he said at a ceremony marking Israel's capture of Arab east Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War.
The United States as well as Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany are in the midst of negotiations with Tehran to finalise a deal by June 30 that would prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, in exchange for an easing of crippling economic sanctions.
Israel says that Iran cannot be trusted to honour the nascent deal, which is anyway full of loopholes.

(58,724 posts)Jordan occupied it, expelled all the Jewish residents, desecrated the synagogues.
We are talking about The Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem being cleansed of all of its Jews during the Jordanian occupation.

(25,699 posts)Jerusalem was never Israeli territory.
Israel invaded it in 1948 and illegally annexed the western portion in the same year over the course of its war of conquest and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people. Jordan held the eastern portion when the Armistice was agreed, dividing the city into east and west sections. Jordan occupied the east, Israel occupied the west. Jerusalem is still not part of Israel not Jordan, but a city occupied by two foreign nations.
In 1967, Israel again launched a war, invaded East Jerusalem (And hte rest of the West Bank) and decalred its occupation over those territories as well. The West bank, including Jerusalem, is still not Israeli territory, just as Golan and the sinai (at hte time) were not. And are not.
Jerusalem is an occupied city. To "liberate" it then would be to have freed it from occupation and returned to Palestinian control.

(6,171 posts)The Palestinian population wasn't liberated, it was and still is occupied under apartheid rule.
There was a war, and the city was divided between country A and B, and the civilian population was forced to flee to the respective side of the city that corresponds to their ethnic affiliation to either A or B. Then there was another war, and A conquers the whole city. Under the rule of A, the population affiliated with A is given the right to stay in the homes that were abandoned by B in the area that was held by A in the previous war, as well as given the right to move in where they were before in the area that was conquered by B, even if it means that the population affiliated to B is displaced and thrown out on the street.
The population affiliated to B is only allowed to live in some areas that were conquered by B in the first war, but don't get the right to move back to their homes they abandoned, nor will any new neighbourhoods be built for them anywhere. The population affiliated to B are also forced to live under a system of apartheid, where they lack basic democratic rights.
I think that apartheid isn't liberation. Eastern Jerusalem was in no way liberated.

(58,724 posts)The Jewish Quarter of the Old City was occupied by Jordan who proceeded to evict the Jewish population there and destroy centuries old Jewish synagogues and other historical and significant sites.
The land was then liberated from Jordanian rule and now people of all faiths live and worship in the city and all of the holy sites for all religions are treated respectfully.
To ban Jews from the Jewish Quarter, as the Jordanians did during their occupation, was criminal.

(6,171 posts)If all of Jerusalems population were given equal rights after Israel took over the whole city, I think that it would be possible, with some stretch to use the word liberation. Now, liberation is only possible in the future, either with the one-state solution or the complete removal of the illegal settlements.
