Homophobic op-ed by Islamic leader raises Arab Israeli ire

Israeli Islamic Movement deputy wishes AIDS on gay supporters after same-sex wedding of Luxembourg premier

Sheikh Kamal Khatib of the Islamic movement, right, is brought to arraignment in a Jerusalem court after being arrested for provoking riots on the Temple Mount and East Jerusalem, October 4, 2009 (Matanya Tausig/Flash90)

A homophobic article by an Israeli Islamic leader has sparked a flurry of condemnations by Arab civil society, shining a light on a usually suppressed debate on gay rights.

Commenting on the May 15 same-sex wedding of Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Sheikh Kamal Khatib, deputy head of the Islamic Movement in Israel, launched a scathing attack on homosexuality in an op-ed titled “You make me sick,” published in a website associated with the group, Yaffa48.com.

“Western societies have reached the lowest of lows,” wrote Khatib. “Try as they may to call this marriage, or a natural phenomenon, or [to call for] respect of personal choices, these societies have been succumbing not to hostile armies but to moral degradation and the renouncement of human nature.”

Also from the article:
In a statement issued Tuesday, Arab nationalist party Balad compared its opposition to homophobia to that of the “colonialist” Israeli regime.
“In its core, our wish for freedom by striving to liberate ourselves from the oppression of colonialism is part of our yearning for human liberation guaranteeing the rights of individuals in their personal lives,” the communique read, warning Israel against using Khatib’s comments to portray itself as tolerant towards minorities.

Al-Qaws, a Palestinian NGO supporting sexual and gender diversity in Palestinian society, argued in a rare statement issued Monday that Khatib’s concern over homosexuality may indicate a paradigm shift in Arab treatment of the subject.

My take:
So in spite of efforts by some at DU and in the media to portray all Palestinians as homophobes we see this very nuanced statement.

Balad is a party in the Knesset.

Unfortunately Palestinian Gays have no such debate absolutely no rights and fear for their lives just for being born Gay.

It's absolutely disgraceful.

Democracy does.

A place where you can come out the closet and have nothing to fear except for people like this sheik but other Israeli Arabs will come to your defense .

I'm afraid this doesn't happen beyond the green line except maybe in East Jerusalem but certainly not in Ramallah nor in Gaza where one fears for ones life if Born a sin of being Gay .

It's a disgrace that this is not addressed before recognizing or rewarding .

9. There is no support or tolerance for Gays in Paleatine

There is fear of death and absolutely no protection.

The Israeli Arab parties and organizations are seemingly tolerant of Gays and there seems to be major cultural differences happening among the Arab Israelis .

This OP is extremely encouraging demonstrating that Israeli Arabs have a very different tolerance and support of LGBT than any other of their Arab brethren and neighbors.

Gay rights and tolerance in Palestine- Gaza and the West Bank is non existent and I wish they followed the lead of their neighbors in this regard because as it exists today within the recognized state of Palestine is an absolute disgrace....
