Israel losing Democrats, ‘can’t claim bipartisan US support,’ top pollster warns

New survey by Frank Luntz shows almost half of Democratic ‘opinion elites’ think Israel is racist, barely half believe it wants peace, and three quarters feel it has too much influence on US policy

Three quarters of highly educated, high income, publicly active US Democrats — the so-called “opinion elites” — believe Israel has too much influence on US foreign policy, almost half of them consider Israel to be a racist country, and fewer than half of them believe that Israel wants peace with its neighbors. These are among the findings of a new survey carried out by US political consultant Frank Luntz.

Detailing the survey results to The Times of Israel on Sunday, Luntz called the findings “a disaster” for Israel. He summed them up by saying that the Democratic opinion elites are converting to the Palestinians, and “Israel can no longer claim to have the bipartisan support of America.”

He said he “knew there was a shift” in attitudes to Israel among US Democrats “and I have been seeing it get worse” in his ongoing polls. But the new findings surprised and shocked him, nonetheless. “I didn’t expect it to become this blatant and this deep.”

I think many Democrats didn't vote because of the Gaza conflict where 2,000 Palestinians were killed.

If there is another conflict between now and November 2016 you could see the same result in the Presidential election.

Asked whether the government is doing enough to tackle racist attitudes in Israel, only 10.3 percent of respondents said that it was. Some 70.2 percent, meanwhile, said the government wasn't doing enough, and 19.5 percent said that the government actually encourages racism.

Just like in a lot of countries. But that's quite different than claiming like you did that Israel is a racist society.

As I pointed out, Israel is extremely diverse, so assimilation and acculturation is going to take some time.

Three out of four are in favour of segregated roads for Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank, and 58% believe Israel already practises apartheid against Palestinians, the poll found.

A third want Arab citizens within Israel to be banned from voting in elections to the country's parliament. Almost six out of 10 say Jews should be given preference to Arabs in government jobs, 49% say Jewish citizens should be treated better than Arabs, 42% would not want to live in the same building as Arabs and the same number do not want their children going to school with Arabs.

Whatever its flaws, is and should be the United States' primarily ally in the middle east and the U.S. should fully support Israel. This has nothing to do with ethnicity or religion, but rather is based on the fact that Israel is one of the few democracies in the middle east, doesn't harbor terrorists that want to blow up U.S. citizens and its elite aren't funding terrorism.

is yet to be seen. IMO it comes down to this for elected politicians, 'will it lose me votes?', and for most Democrats domestic issues will almost always be more important than foreign affairs, so no politicains will most likely not lose any votes over Israel because other issues such as economic and racial/gender/sexual orentation equality and justice will take precedence over a single issue such as Israel, these are the issues we tend to cast our votes on and why we are Democrats. So while this may be an opinion trend among Democrats, do not expect to see much change from elected officials.
