Israeli Gov't Under Pressure to Lock Down Palestinian Neighborhoods

http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/1.680210

Opposition leader Isaac Herzog has urged the government to temporarily close the flashpoint Temple Mount, following Tuesday's deadly terror attacks in Jerusalem. Herzog also called on the government to impose a lockdown on Jerusalem's Arab neighborhoods and fight what he called "online incitement" by Islamists. He made the comments on Facebook.

Herzog's statements come amid calls from politicians from across the political specturm for the government to crackdown on Arab communities inside Israel.

At an emergency security cabinet meeting convened by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for later this afternoon, Education Minister Naftali Bennett will demand the government put Palestinian communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem on lockdown in response to Tuesday's string of deadly terror attacks. Bennett will also urge the government to move to destroy the homes of any terrorist – not just those who kill Israelis – and move to deport those implicated in attacks that wound Israelis.

...

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat says he has asked the defense establishment to impose a closure on the city's Arab neighborhoods.

"We shouldn't allow them to enter,” said Barkay at the scene of this morning’s deadly bus attack. “The lives of the residents of Jerusalem are more important than anything else."

Apparently Israelis are starting to rethink the idea that Jerusalem ought to be the undivided capital of Israel--they're already verbally distinguishing Arabs and East Jerusalem from the Israeli half of Jerusalem.

As usual, much discussion about how to treat the symptoms, no appetite for treating the underlying condition.

1. A one-state solution certainly seems impossible at this point

Coexistence does not appear to be in the cards for the foreseeable future.

at some point they'll just have to get tired of killing each other, with the Palestinians tiring of nihilism and the Israelis tiring of being Goliath.

I think Israelis and Palestinians want to have as little to do with one another as possible at this point.

precede the binational state.

Then comes the South Africa treatment, which will help force the Israeli privileged class to abandon Political Judaism and Judeo-Supremacism.

Then the binational state.

And demanding that they do so is ridiculous, to say the least.

A two-state solution, unrealistic thought it may be, is a hell of a lot more realistic than the scenario you describe.

6. They will need to give up POLITICAL Judaism and embrace the wisdom

of the world's most famous Jew " render unto Caesar what is Caesar's."

Faith should always be a strictly private matter, not one that forms the basis of a political system. Of course they should retain their private faith, but keep it out of the government.

Political Judaism is turning out to be no better than Political Islam, or the Holy Roman Empire.

7. This is the beginning of the end of the two-state solution.

By making Arab neighbourhoods into cul de sacs, they will only become non-viable slums that can't ever become independent. These are desperate measures that in the end will only make the one-state solution more inevitable. It's pretty scary that Israel even contemplates a collective punishment like this, but this is how far things have gone.

8. Israel’s new security steps: IDF to guard buses, surround Arab neighborhoods

The security cabinet on Tuesday night approved a series of measures to bolster security in Jerusalem and thwart would-be terrorists, in an effort to counter the ongoing wave of violent attacks that has left nine Israelis dead and dozens more injured.

Public transport in the capital will receive extra security, according to the recommendations adopted by ministers. This will be provided by IDF troops until more security guards can be recruited. Earlier Tuesday, two Arab terrorists stormed a bus in the capital, killing two people and wounding more than a dozen more.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that Israel would use “all means” available to curb ongoing Palestinian terrorism and violence, and promised “to bring quiet back to the citizens of Israel.”
