MK Ayman Odeh was greeted like a rock star with an enthusiastic standing ovation as he gave a fiery speech as the closing keynote speaker at the HaaretzQ conference in New York City.
The Joint List leaders sharp speech, repeatedly punctuated by applause, seemed to supply the two elements that many of the conferences handwringing conversations concerning the feared death of the two-state solution and growth of regional threats lacked and that the crowd, made up largely of left-wing American Jews, were hungry for. The dual elements: bold clear-throated condemnations of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli right, paired with a hopeful call for a shared future between Palestinians and Jews based on mutual empathy and recognition of each others pain.
As a Palestinian, I cannot accept that there will be a world without a place for Palestinians to shape their own future. As an Israeli citizen, I know that Israel cannot be a just and true democracy so long as it occupies another people. As an Arab citizen of Israel struggling for political, civil and social rights, I see how these problems are chained to one another, Odeh said.

(30,109 posts)So what are we to make of that?
What's so left-wing about adoring a politician who supports extreme religious fundamentalist Rightwing, fascist Jihadi terror?
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)decided what left wing American Jews think. How many were in the audience? A few hundred? What a joke. Was there a poll done or they just decided that one forum in one city would be representative of all leftwing Jews?
I would have been much more impressed by Odeh had he not seen fit to have the Israeli flag removed - a real statesman would have just asked for a Palestinian flag to be put beside it but no......that apparently was too much.

(14,851 posts)The chutzpah being that that particular poster purports himself a Democratic Party supporter .
Well I got news for you Democratic Party policy does not include homophobia, hate on Israel ,antiZionist to the extreme, extremist blood theories on Jews , support of right wing regimes in the Middle East etc etc etc....
Chutzpah indeed.....

(26,060 posts)couldn't care less that some here don't consider me left wing. These are the same people that think Americans will turn their back on Israel just because bibi is PM. They have their heads in the sand and I can't be bothered with that kind of nonsense. It's they that don't even begin to represents Democrats. Any candidate that trashes Israel will lose any credibility and lose....lose huge.

You are confusing your Arabs/Israeli-Palestinians/Palestinians with each other .
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)I did confuse the two. Same comment goes for Mr. Erekat - it would have been so wonderfully statesmanlike to have both flags visible. It would have been a beautiful sight.

(58,724 posts)Granted, it is a Ha'aretz forum so maybe the Ha'aretz coverage of it is going to be slanted a little. But what do you think makes this figure so well-liked in these circles?
shira
(30,109 posts).....is that it's cool to support BDS, demonize Israel and Jews, and understand terrorism then it's no wonder Odeh is so well-received by the "religious" Left.
Turns out the "religious" Right loves him too when he's bashing Israel. I'm talking about the other Right, like the fascists, KKK'ers, or extreme Rightwing bigots who hate Jews --- as well as religious fundamentalist Jew-hating Jihadis and their supporters.
