Israeli Winner at Berlin Film Festival Calls Israeli Government 'Fascist' at Movie Screening

Director Udi Aloni, whose Arabic-language film features mostly Palestinian actors, says that while Netanyahu spreads hate, his film spreads love and coexistence.

Haaretz and Reuters Feb 20, 2016

Israeli director Udi Aloni made headlines in Berlin when he called the Israeli government "fascist" at a Q&A session about his award-winning film "Junction 48."

Aloni, whose Arabic-language hip-hop film featuring mostly Palestinian actors, said that Germany shouldn't supply Israel with submarines because of its fascist government. He also mentioned at the session Palestinian hunger-striker Mohammed al-Qiq as an example non-Jews' lack of rights in Israel, saying that Qiq was dying in administrative detention without being accused of committing a crime.

Aloni, who is the son of Meretz founder Shulamit Aloni, responded to comments on his statements by saying that he was addressing his criticism toward the Israeli government and not the state, and added that his film spreads love and coexistence, as opposed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who spreads hate.

"Junction 48" took the Panorama Audience Award for best fiction film. The film "Who's Gonna Love Me Now?" by Tomer and Barak Heymann was voted best Panorama documentary.

I think the reaction of Miri Regev is in itself an answer to the allegations of fascism: "Regev said Aloni’s statements were “clear proof that artists who subvert the state, defame it and hurt its legitimacy should not be funded by the tax payer. A sane country should not assist slanderers and denouncers who malign it, immediately after drinking from its coffers.” (http://www.timesofisrael.com/israeli-films-win-top-audience-awards-at-berlin-film-fest/)

I don't think Israel is a fascist state, but it's clear that Miri Regev believes it is, and that she gets to decide what kind of culture is to be allowed.

BTW I saw that Udi Aloni has put up the movie "Forgiveness" on Youtube. Is it worth watching?

Not sure what genre it was, but the screenplay could well have been written by Peter Høeg (He wrote "Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow", among other things) with all that symbolism and mysticism intertwined with people's lives. A lot of ghosts, even if it wasn't a regular ghost story.

It was my cup of tea and I liked it. 4 out 5 stars.

I feel that the current situation in the occupied territories is a big mistake that's been almost 50 years in the making. Netanyahu should really watch the film - he might learn something...

Let me tell you something from inside the Prime Minister’s Office. I was told that when Netanyahu analyzed the results of the 2013 election, he said there were three reasons for the weakening of the Likud-Yisrael Beiteinu [joint slate] and the disparity between the 38 seats predicted by the polls and the 31 they got. One was “The Gatekeepers,” which was released a month before the election; the second was the “Diskin document” – the interview I conducted with Yuval Diskin for [Israeli daily] Yedioth Ahronoth, in which he talked about the cigars and the chefs and the shameful behavior of the triumvirate that ran the country; and the third was the country’s rightward thrust. He estimated the combination of all those factors at six-seven seats. There’s a good reason why Netanyahu doesn’t like “The Gatekeepers.”

When it was released, he announced he had no intention of watching it. Do you know whether he actually saw it?

I think he did.

" Censored Voices "

STORY

One week after the 1967 'Six-Day War', a group of young kibbutzniks, led by renowned author Amos Oz and Editor Avraham Shapira, recorded intimate conversations with soldiers returning from the battlefield. The Israeli army censored the recordings, allowing only a fragment of the conversations to be published. Censored Voices reveals these original recordings for the first time.

But if Israel were truly fascist, then at best they'd expel him from the country. If let back in to their fascist state, they'd jail, torture, execute him, his family, etc...

Israel is far and away the most open society on the planet, which is great for Israel haters who can say or write anything they want - even in Israel - where they can also support terrorists, incite more hatred leading to more attacks, goad soldiers in order to 'catch the Jew' for some propaganda purposes, etc...

No other country on earth - including western nations - would allow that.
