Trump Supporters Open Campaign Office in West Bank, Declaring Him Good for the Settlers

The new makeshift office was proudly touted as the first U.S. campaign headquarters ever opened over the 'Green Line,' a reference to Israel’s internationally recognized borders.

KARNEI SHOMRON, West Bank – By opening an office in the heart of a major Jewish settlement, was the Donald Trump campaign in Israel trying to make a political statement?
Not at all, said Tzvika Brot, its newly appointed director, when asked by reporters about the particular choice of venue. “All we want to do is to get American citizens interested in voting in the U.S. election to register now before it’s too late,” he said on Monday during the official launching event.

But Mark Zell, the American-born lawyer who serves as chair of Republican Overseas Israel, thought otherwise.

“While Tzvika said this is not a political statement as such,” he interjected, “that’s not entirely true. I worked along with representatives of the Trump campaign to get passed a historic amendment to the Republican Party platform, and this amendment specifically omitted any reference to Israel as an occupier and coincided with Trump’s own statements that building homes, synagogues and schools for Arabs and Jews in Judea and Samaria was an issue for the Israeli government and people to decide – not something that America should be dictating to Israel.”

Israeli Trump supporters open campaign office in West Bank

Israeli supporters of U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump have opened a campaign office in the occupied West Bank, saying they hope to get as many American expatriates as possible to cast an absentee ballot for their candidate.

There are about 300,000 U.S. citizens in Israel, according to the non-profit group Republican Overseas Israel, which opened the office in the Jewish settlement Karnei Shomron on Monday. It estimates as many as 80,000 of them live in the West Bank, though it is not clear how many are eligible voters.

The initiative has no official ties to the Trump campaign or the Republican National Committee (RNC), and the Israeli group opened the West Bank office, and a handful of others throughout Israel, with its own funds, said co-chairman Marc Zell.

"We are however in close coordination with the Trump campaign and RNC to the extent that it's feasible," said Zell.

A poll of Jewish Israelis conducted in May found 40 percent of respondents backed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and 31 percent supported Trump. The poll did not specify whether those who responded were eligible to vote in the U.S. election.

On Israel’s Preference

Poll numbers that were sent to me by pollster Menachem Lazar (Panels Politics) prove that this election cycle is unique. For the first time since 2000 it seems as if Israelis tend to prefer the Democratic candidate – Hillary Clinton – over the Republican candidate – Donald Trump.
