The organisers claimed those chanting anti-semitic crap and throwing flares and fireworks were a small number of those in the crowd, but even so, I think everyone in that crowd were guilty of a lack of sensitivity. The attacks in Israel had only happened the day before, and the sails of the Opera House were lit up in white and blue to show sympathy for Israel. That was the reason the rally happened at the Opera House and not at the usual venue of Hyde Park, which is where a much larger rally was held today. I just got home from a weekend in Sydney and there were so many popo in the city I think they outnumbered the Sunday morning crowd wandering around Darling Harbour....
I'm not surprised at all that antisemites made an appearance at the Opera House. They're the same breed of ugly creature as those Nazis who goosestepped and did Nazi salutes outside Victorian Parliament and turned up to support Posie Fucking Parker, who's another ugly creature that I detest with the burning fury of a thousand suns. It's how we react to their shit that matters. The Victorian government outlawed the Nazi salute, which results in the neo-nazis turning up but just not doing that salute. The noise from the NSW govt about banning any further pro-Palestinian rallies gets me cranky because we're supposed to have the right to protest (lockdowns during Covid being the exception) and even if we find a message abhorrent, that doesn't mean it should be banned. And to be clear, supporting the Palestinian people is a completely different thing than supporting Hamas. It seems to me after reading GD that some are deliberately conflating the two....
