Why Netanyahu Backed Down

"SNIP.............................................

The clash came as a surprise in Israel, but in hindsight, there was a prelude — the speech Mr. Netanyahu delivered a week earlier to the United Nations General Assembly. In a memorable cartoonish graphic, Mr. Netanyahu depicted a “red line” that he said Israel would not let Iran cross. But he also acknowledged that Iran would not be able to cross it until next spring or summer. In doing so, he essentially reset the urgency of his warnings and ended speculation that Israel might mount a unilateral attack on Iran before the American presidential election.

The public row with Mr. Barak illustrated the magnitude of Mr. Netanyahu’s retreat and his difficulty in explaining it. He was left with implying that he had been undermined, if not betrayed by, his own defense minister. But that was not the full story of why he had blinked.

In fact, Mr. Netanyahu’s about-face resulted from a long-building revolt by Israel’s professional security establishment against the very idea of an early military attack, particularly one without the approval of the United States.

For months, former and even serving chiefs of Israel’s defense and intelligence communities have vigorously and publicly opposed Mr. Netanyahu’s case for attacking Iran sooner, rather than after all other means have been exhausted. Meir Dagan, the much respected former head of Mossad, did so to an American audience in an interview with Lesley Stahl broadcast last March by CBS’ “60 Minutes.” In Israel earlier, he had been quoted as saying that such an attack was “the stupidest idea I have ever heard.”

Our invasion in Iraq removed the very close finger holding down Iran. Iran did not want to push Iraq with Saddam in charge but we failed to see the whole picture. Obama is not willing to allow Isreal to attack with the back up from the USA. it was an attack to also help Rmoney.

... for 10 years now and yet, somehow, no attack has happened. If I had $100 for every article claiming that an Israeli attack on Iran was imminent I would be retired -- and retired well.

Also, if you're going to criticize Israel -- learn to spell it. Otherwise, your moniker becomes ironic.

As the civilised country it is. Neighborhoods, skyscrapers, mosques, schools, universities, inhabitanted by, tah dah get this WHITE PEOPLE, they ARE not that brown. Should make the genocide of them a little more difficult for some.

I say roll the pictures of the children we are murdering with the current sanctions and compare them with the deformed children of Faluja.

Yeah, Israel, we know you need a corner of Iran for an oil.pipeline straight to Zion. But we are talking about taking out an advanced civilised nation not a bunch of taliban zealots in a mud cave.

FUCK off.

"Oil pipeline straight to Zion" - what conspiracy websites do you frequent?

Who is talking about "taking out an advanced civilized nation"? The only action Israel is considering is attacking Iran's nuclear sites - not destroying a whole nation. This is as opposed to Iran's leaders who do indeed talk about destroying a whole nation - Israel - which obviously seems to bother you not one whit.

What was interpreted to be blowing Israel off the map ten years ago, either. It's been disproven, over and over.

Just why is Israel spoiling for war, then. So they can use THEIR huge nuclear arsenals..They are loaded to the gills with nuclear armaments. Doesn't seem to calm them down about blowing Iran off the map.

They just want to wipe the other sons of Abraham out of existence so that when Jesus returns he won't have so many non-christians to convert, during the rapture. You voting for Romney? He wants to help all that happen.

"In case of a military attack by the Zionists, our dreams about annihilation of Israel will come true and the trend of the annihilation of the regime will be speeded up."

In relevant remarks last month, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said an enemy invasion of Iran is possible, but such a war would put an end to the life of the Zionist regime of Israel.

"Owing to the (high) speed (of the growth and development) of the Islamic Revolution, this cancerous tumor, Israel, is challenging us to war, but it is not clear when this war would take place," Jafari said in Tehran in September.

"War may break out, but if Zionists start something, that will be the point of their annihilation and the endpoint of their story," he added.
