Hezbollah's risky act of terror
Hezbollah is a shrewd player, but the bombing of Israeli tourists in Europe has no value for its political plans in Lebanon, writes Shahram Akbarzadeh.
After a year of investigations, the Bulgarian authorities have confirmed what Israel has been saying about the role of Hezbollah in the 2012 bombing in Burgas that killed five Israeli tourists and their Bulgarian bus driver.
The Bulgarian interior minister was careful to avoid a categorical link between the two terrorists and Hezbollah, but his findings were damning nonetheless. This is how he put it: "A reasonable assumption, I repeat a reasonable assumption, can be made that the two of them were members of the militant wing of Hezbollah."
Hezbollah has denied any involvement in this terrorist attack, but the damage to its standing in Europe is significant. France and Germany have come under sever diplomatic pressure by the United States and Israel to add this organisation to their list of terrorist groups and ban its activities. If that happens, Hezbollah will suffer a major blow to its ability to raise funds and organise its sympathisers.
