HEBRON (Maan) -- Palestinians and foreign solidarity activists on Saturday set up a new protest village in the south Hebron hills, and vowed to remain there despite Israeli forces moving to dismantle the structures.
Early Saturday, activists set up steel-framed tents near the Palestinian village of al-Tuwani, calling the encampment "Canaan".
Younis Arar, coordinator of the popular committees in the southern West Bank, told Ma'an that soldiers assaulted the 30 activists who had gathered in the area.
"We began building the tents and were surprised when a large force of the Israeli army began attacking us and destroying tents and hitting us ... We will try and build Canaan village again," Arar said.

(14,851 posts)Before lending support nowadays it is important to know who these people are and what are there motives.
For example : is Greta Berlin or any of her Facebook coterie of Jew haters amongst them ? Anyone from the free Gaza movement ?

Seriously, you can take that approach, or look at the Palestinians objective, does it have merit or not.
If you're looking for a completely sanitized support system, you'll probably be disappointed.

(41,212 posts)It seems to me that Susiya is protesting against something that needs to be protested, and that it is doing so in a constructive way. Those of us who support a Palestinian state, but oppose violent means of protest, need to show this by supporting constructive and nonviolent activism.
I am sure that some of the foreign activists have good motives and some have less good motives, but it doesn't detract from the cause itself. Just as opposition to the war in Iraq is a good thing, even if some of the people opposed to the war (the BNP, Ron Paul) are bad people whom we should not support.

(12,606 posts)when what the article was about was a protest village, by Palestinians, in the south Hebron hills.
You must have read and reread (with joy?) the portion of the article where the IDF swooped in to save the day by dismantling the...as they call it "illegal structures" and responded with riot dispersal means.
I'm surprised that the IDF would know the first thing on how to dismantle an illegal structure since there are thousands of really illegal structures in the West Bank inhabited by Israeli colonists.

(12,606 posts)they realize the position they argue from is one of moral bankruptcy.
I'd rather have Greta Garbo dropped into the mix, but I'm a sucker for classic movies.

RAMALLAH, West Bank Israeli soldiers and border guards Saturday removed tents Palestinians had set up in an area south of Hebron, in the south of the West Bank, to protest Israeli plans to take over the land.
The tent village named Canaan is the fifth that activists have set up in the last month on land they fear Israel intends to seize to build settlements. Israel has foiled each attempt.
Mazen Qumsiyeh, a Palestinian activist at the Canaan village, said between 15 and 20 Palestinian and international activists made two attempts to set up the tents there.
Early in the morning, he said, they put up three tents, which were quickly seized by Israeli soldiers; two hours later, the activists returned to a nearby plot and set up one tent.
The army brought reinforcements to the area, declared it a closed military zone after setting up checkpoints on roads leading to it, and then pushed the activists away, Qumsiyeh said, after spraying stinky water that made it impossible to stay in the tent.
It is our natural right to develop, reclaim, improve, use, and live on all our lands free and without threats from the occupiers, he said.
He said the activity was intended to help area villagers to cultivate and reclaim their agricultural land.
The previous tent village protests took place in areas east and north of Jerusalem, and areas near Jenin and Nablus.

(30,099 posts)NABLUS (Maan) -- Israeli forces detained six Palestinians overnight Saturday, a military representative said.
Troops also clashed with Palestinians in towns in the northern West Bank on Saturday evening.
At dawn, forces searched several homes in Burqa village, near Nablus, and detained Shadi Abu Omar, Fadi Abu Omar, and Munjed Daughlas.
Another man, Mousa Issa Abu Sabha, 24, was detained in a night raid on Yatta, south of Hebron.
An Israeli military spokesman said two people were detained in Burqa, two others in Arura, near Ramallah, and another in Beit Kahil and Yatta, in the Hebron district.
Also late Saturday night, Israeli forces surrounded the village of Azzun, near Qalqiliya, and fired tear gas, causing breathing difficulties amongst the residents, locals said, noting that settlers tried to enter the village.
An Israeli military source said around 50 Israelis gathered in the area, some tried to enter Azzun village and others throw rocks at Palestinians, lightly injuring one.
Israeli troops tried to disperse the settlers and prevent them entering the village, the source said.
Israeli troops also raided Burin village, south of Nablus, on Saturday evening, and fired tear gas, but no injuries were reported. An Israeli military spokesman said routine activity was conducted in the area, but he was not aware of any clashes.

(30,099 posts)HEBRON (Maan) -- Israeli forces prevented nearly 150 farmers and activists from reaching their lands in Susiya in the south Hebron hills on Saturday morning, locals said.
They said Israeli soldiers declared the area a closed military zone, but allowed Israeli settlers to remain in the area.
Susiya is fighting a court battle against the demolition of their homes, and to gain access to farmland near an Israeli settlement established on Palestinian land.
At hearing last week, Israel's Supreme Court ordered the Israeli state to give the court an appropriate zoning plan and its position on the repeated blocking of Susiya residents from their land.
Rabbis for Human Rights, which is helping represent Susiya in court, said over 1,000 letters of support for Susiya were sent to Israeli President Shimon Peres last week.
