PM names main topics for Obama visit

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at Sunday's weekly cabinet meeting that he welcomes US President Barack Obama's intention to visit Israel this spring and noted he will discuss with him issues pertaining to Iran, Syria and the Palestinians.

The prime minister hinted of the connection between the visit and the coalition negotiations. "These issues, along with others that will be discussed, are of great importance and it is our obligation to treat them with the utmost seriousness. I believe they also call for the harnessing of forces in Israel."

snip* Meanwhile, the New York Times reported Sunday that Israel is considering giving the Palestinians partial control over some areas of the West Bank, as well as releasing prisoners and freezing settlement construction ahead of Obama's visit.

The paper further reported that the United States is expected to release $200 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority that it has withheld for months.

3. some Palestinian criticism of onevoice

Because I wondered why a general multinational peace group would be promoting such a mainstream "solution" to the current situation, that "solution" being the same as that continuously reiterated by the very politicians who have then stalled on the so-called "peace process" while building more settlements, annexing more land, and clearing more "closed military zones" of the Palestinian population, I did some google lookups. I wasn't very impressed by their homepage, their "about" page, which seemed both corporate-centric and Israeli-centric -- and I wonder whether this is the reason why the "onevoice" that they raise is so status-quo.

I'm unsure whether linking to http://electronicintifada.net on DU is sufficient reason to get TOS'ed. But IMO it shouldn't be, esp. considering some of the hair-raisingly rw links I've seen in I/P. In any event, a blog written by Ali Abunimah, Wed, 01/16/2013, provides a critical take on the onevoice organization, and it might be worth reading:

I think the POV and fact posted on Ali Abunimah's blog is worth reading.

The purpose of the trip is still not clear, but the outgoing defense minister is to meet with senior intelligence and Pentagon officials; this is Barak's fourth trip abroad in the last month alone.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak left for Washington on Monday morning for a surprise visit. The exact purpose of his trip is still not clear, but his office said that he was planning to meeting with senior officials in the Pentagon and the American intelligence community.
