Israel Signs Off On 346 New West Bank Settler Homes

By AFP

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM The Israeli defense ministry on Sunday confirmed it had given the green light for the construction of 346 new settler homes in two settlements in the southern West Bank, a statement said.

“The defence ministry has approved plans for 200 housing units in Tekoa and 146 housing units in Nokdim,” the ministry said.

Tekoa and Nokdim are two small isolated settlements deep in the southern West Bank which are located in the Gush Etzion bloc south of Jerusalem that Israel wants to keep hold of in any future peace agreement with the Palestinians.

Late last year, the defence ministry approved plans for another 523 settler homes in another part of Gush Etzion, in what was the first step towards a new settlement city in the area.

Clearly the Israeli defense ministry is here compensating for their plan to destroy and evacuate eight Palestinian villages in south Hebron district. Who can complain about that?

From 2002:

Feb 25, 2002 - Aharon Gorov, 46, of Nokdim, was one of two people killed in a terrorist shooting attack between Tekoa and Nokdim, south of Bethlehem.

Aharon Gorov and Avraham Fish were killed while driving home to participate in a Purim holiday celebration shortly after 4 PM. Gorov was returning early in order to play the accordian at the Purim party. Fish's daughter, Tamar Lipschitz, in her ninth month of pregnancy, was shot in the lower abdomen, and her daughter Karine, 4, suffered from shock.

From 2001:

A meeting between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres was postponed Thursday after an Israeli woman was shot and killed near Bethlehem in the West Bank.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said the meeting, arranged in response to a cease-fire called by Arafat on Tuesday, would not now take place within 24 hours as had been expected.

The Palestinian group "Al-Aqsa Martyr's Battalion," which is associated with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction, claimed responsibility for Thursday's drive-by shooting that left Sarit Amrani, 26, dead near the Jewish settlement of Tekoa.

According to Israeli medical relief sources, the couple's three children were in the back seat of their vehicle during the shooting but were not hurt.
