Republican rising star Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) departed for the Middle East on Saturday, beginning a journey that could do much to burnish the possible 2016 presidential candidate's foreign policy credentials.
Rubio will visit Israel and Jordan and will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian Prime Minister Fayyad and Jordan's King Abdullah.
His trip comes as Secretary of State John Kerry prepares to visit the region in his inaugural trip in his new position, and ahead of President Obama's first trip to Israel in March.
America's friendship with Israel is a truly special one, and we must continue to do all we can to support this beacon of democracy, religious freedom and free enterprise in the heart of an unstable region, Rubio said in a statement announcing his trip.

(2,012 posts)I see tonite on FOX our favorite "Christian" Mike Huckabee is in Israel and saying that Obama should pull Hagel's nomination since he hates Israel. This is a terrible time for people like Rubio and Huckabee to be spouting the lie that Israel is the only democratic state in the Mideast and our only friend. And that all Muslims and Islamic states should be condemned by the US. It puts Kerry and Obama in a terrible bind on their coming trip.

...As a side thought, do you think the people who go to the wall to actually, y'know, pray there get sick and tired of American politicians stopping by for photo ops every three days? I mean really, here's a Mormon, in a kippa, a crowd of photographers around him snapping away... I dunno, the whole thing just seems ridiculous to me.
