Landmark case puts 'anti-Semitic' BDS on trial in Australia

An Israeli-based group has launched a landmark legal action against a controversial Australian academic whom it claims breached racial discrimination laws by boycotting an Israeli academic.

Shurat HaDin - Israel Law Center, an Israeli based civil rights organization, filed the lawsuit in the Federal Court of Australia last week against Jake Lynch, the director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney.

The lawsuit focuses on Lynch’s refusal to sponsor an application by Dan Avnon, an Israeli academic from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, for a Sir Zelman Cowen fellowship in Australia.

Lynch refused to support Avnon’s request because out of support for the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel.

Attorney David Schoen, representing the plaintiffs, stated: “It is, indeed, a sad day for all of us as Americans, when a former President demeans the dignity of his office by intentionally misstating critically important facts concerning events of great historic significance and public interest, simply to advance a personal anti-Israel animus and to foster the agenda of the enemies of Israel who pump so much money into the Center which bears his nam

I know! If the Federal Court knocks them back, there's always the full court, and then they can go for the gold and take it to the High Court! And I hope they put a Severity 1 label on their application, otherwise the Commonwealth govt's attempts to quash the new marriage equality law in the ACT by taking it to the High Court might push it onto the back-burner!

Using racial discrimination laws, to silence critics of ethnic cleansing and cultural genocide, on behalf of a nation where civil rights depend on genetic makeup.

Of course, Australia will stand by previous precedents - "Israeli" is not a racial category (even within Israel - especially within Israel), and "Zionism" is not an intrinsic character of Jewishness, but rather an independent political philosophy.
