Former Israeli ambassador to US says in Politico op-ed that more organizations could boycott Israeli academia if action not taken.
The US Congress should act to quell the movement to boycott Israel academically, former Israeli ambassador to Washington Michael Oren argued Friday, in the wake of the American Studies Association's (ASA) decision to boycott Israeli academic institutions.
The 5,000-member association, which describes itself as the nations oldest and largest association devoted to the interdisciplinary study of American culture and history, announced on Monday that it had endorsed and would participate in a boycott of Israeli universities and academic institutions. Another small North American academic association the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association - followed suit two days later, declaring a boycott of its own against Israeli academic institutions.
Officials in Jerusalem have downplayed the significance of the boycott, which has been widely condemned by Jewish groups. Oren, however, writing in an opinion article published in Politico, argues that unless the boycott is fought back against, more organizations could follow suit.
Oren, who finished his 50-month tenure as Israeli envoy to the US in September, said that Congress should pass laws which would quash the boycott, as it did in 1977 in response to the Arab economic boycott of Israel.

Also, it's "you." Three letters. One consonant, followed by two vowels, only one of which is 'u'. If you're doing this via phone, remember what Gin Rummy has to say;

(12,283 posts)i have no problem with social groups, groups based on skin color, height, or funny noses or even countries that have a national culture based on history/race/genes etc....
i do have a problem with anyone who supports the creation of a new society/country that is not based on western civil rights for its citizens as its very foundation.
..and if that new facist country is based on race for its govt, than its cheerleaders are not just pro facist but racist as well.

and of course you can explain how your cheerleading for an anti democratic state based on the genes of some of its citizens.and how u defend the racism ..that should be fun

(12,283 posts)i honestly done see how anyone who claims to be be pro human rights, anti racsim can cheerlead for the new Palestenain state..cant see what kind of state the Palestenians will have...once there is no occupation, and then claim its none of anybodies business what kind of state they make or how bad they treat their own and also claim its none of israels business if this new state fails....as if it wont affect israel directly

(25,699 posts)whats commonly known as racism....as apparently u do
I asked if this meant you are anti-Israel... because Israel very certainly was a country created in about the most non-democratic way imaginable, on the basis that one ethnic group is superior to another, a notion that persists to the present day as you and your fellow posters constantly demonstrate.
I hadn't noticed that you decided it would be a good idea to do an edit to add a line like this. Wow. Just... wow. I'm not sure what's more bewildering, that you're accusing me of this, or that you think Khomeini was a Palestinian.
This is known as "a lie."
What exactly do you define as a "funny" nose? And how does one have a culture based on genes? You silly thing, you are 70% identical to a fucking CUCUMBER at the genetic level, and you want to tell me cultures are based on genes? It's bad enough that you want to badly to engage me on the topic this forum is dedicated to, don't you dare think you can start talking biology as if it backs your kookery up.
..and if that new facist country is based on race for its govt, than its cheerleaders are not just pro facist but racist as well.
And I asked you again, if this meant you were anti-Israel. I don't really know if I can make it any less subtle for you, honestly. I think that "are you anti-Israel" is about rock bottom on the subtlety meter. Should I fire up MS Paint, would a pictoral guide to the question help you?
Clarify? Okay. i'm mocking you for being a two-faced hypocritical sack of garbage. Also, because I think you're fucking sloshed.
Once again, I think you have me confused for a supporter of Israel. While that's something of a unique experience for me, i have to inform you that I believe you're mistaken.
But I suppose invoking human rights and anti-racism as an argument to preserve and even expand that occupation makes perfect sense to you?
Is it opposites day?

...in place of Israel, then what are you advocating instead?
Be clear.
And if it's this 1-state nonsense, what's the timeline on when everyone will be on board with this secular democratic utopia? Decades? Centuries?

(45,850 posts)really though this campaign against the boycott could well backfire and backfire big time- law suits, intimidation, smear campaigns, and a call for Congressional action all could be seen as an attempt to muzzle protest against Israel not to mention free speech and freedom of who one chooses to associate with or not

I just thought that I would bring up how our esteemed republicans love to fellate Israel for their own ends: their end time constituents...oh and of course money.
Happy holidays.

(12,804 posts)It shows that it is starting to make its point to the pro-apartheid Israelis and their allies.
It still has a ways to go, but as Gandhi said, "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
Well, looks like the boycott is entering Gandhi's third stage of non-violent resistance to injustice.
