http://972mag.com/meretz-we-wont-oppose-annexation-of-jordan-valley/84690/The bill, endorsed by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Sunday, would apply Israeli law to much of the Jordan Valley effectively negating the possibility a future Palestinian state that might share a border with any country other than Israel. Under international and Israeli law, the Jordan Valley is as much an occupied territory as Hebron, Jenin or East Jerusalem, successive Israeli governments have long insisted this area was of special concern and Israelis have developed a narrative to match. Settlements in the Jordan Valley are referred to in Hebrew as communities and kibbutzim, creating the impression that they are in Israel proper. In a poll conducted two years ago, most Israelis under 20 did not even know the area was occupied.
The bill proposed by Miri Regev is unlikely to pass into law, and Galon hasnt given up on the two-state solution: annexation would be a provocation even the apathetic second-term Obama would find impossible to swallow. When I interviewed Galon a few months ago she declined to even discuss alternatives to two states because she feared that would legitimize the one-state prospect. Like much of the center-left at the moment, Meretz seems intent on going down with the two-state ship rather than so much as be overheard considering a lifeboat.

What do you make of this tactic?

(25,699 posts)Meretz wants to make sure everyone sees it wagging a finger... but doesn't want to actually apply action.
I like how the article claims that even Obama couldn't ignore this provocation... yes he could. jesus christ, does anyone, anywhere still imagine that any US president, Obama or otherwise, gives a flying fuck about this issue? Know what Israel / Palestine is for Obama? same thing it was for Bush and Clinton, a penny slot machine where if he wins, he gets crowned as the motherufcker who "brought peace to the middle east," and if he loses, oh well, he's out some pocket change.
If any US administration had the barest interest in resolving this issue, we would be talking to Abbas first at every point, and John Kerry wouldn't have looked at this annexation plan and said "Oh sure, that's good, uh huh, hey, look at my new score on Angry Birds!"

(58,724 posts)What do you think of Galon's approach here?
"This way, they can present themselves, time and again, as patriotic victims of back-stabbing lefties, while Netanyahu relies on the same lefties to spare him the need to intervene against a motion most of his own electorate would support. This is the role from which Meretz is finally bowing out."
Do you think it is right of them to bow out of playing this role?

(25,699 posts)It looks to me as if they're willing to risk the future of Palestine - and let's be real, the lives of lots of Israelis, because this bill will cause a violent response - on the bet that Netanyahu will duck, because they're tired of political catcalling.
Will Netanyahu duck? The man wants to scuttle the peace process (well, scuttle it MORE) and everything i'm seeing from him indicates that he finds a third intifada to be a POSITIVE outcome - then he can crush it (and rest assured, the US will happily coast alongside him the entire way) and be the national hero, hurray. So i think it's a long shot.
