The Palestinian Authority has signed up formally to the Geneva Conventions, which set down the rules of warfare and humanitarian operations in conflict zones, the treaties' guardian, Switzerland, confirms.
Swiss foreign ministry spokesman Pierre-Alain Eltschinger told AFP on Friday that the Palestinian Authority had declared itself party to the conventions on April 2.
This was registered formally by Switzerland on Thursday, he added.
The step is part of a new diplomatic drive by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, coming as peace talks with Israel are close to collapse.

(90,061 posts)UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon accepted the applications to join 13 international conventions, and informed all 193 member states they were made in "in due and proper form."
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters Thursday that Ban informed all 193 UN member states of his acceptance, the Associated Press news agency reported.
The move comes after Israel refused to release a final batch of 26 prisoners, in an attempt to extend talks beyond their April 29 deadline, with the Palestinians retaliating by signing letters of accession to 15 international conventions.
Thirteen were deposited at the UN, one in Geneva, and one in the Netherlands.

(90,061 posts)Israel has proposed a deal to rescue the peace talks, offering to release 26 prisoners if the Palestinian leaders cancel their bid for greater international recognition.
Israeli Intelligence and Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz said this exchange could be a way of continuing the negotiations brokered by US Secretary of State John Kerry.
His words suggest there is a possible opening to prevent the imminent collapse of the peace process, which had appeared to be in tatters last month when Israel failed to release 26 prisoners, prompting the Palestinians to sign up to 15 UN conventions.
Under the US-mediated agreement last year, Israel promised to free 104 prisoners in four groups of 26. The Palestinians had agreed not to use their upgraded membership of the UN to sign any international conventions.

(90,061 posts)So sort of: the chance to accept what was rejected a few days back. Like Abbas would have "come to his senses" by now.
