ADL 'startled and disappointed' over Kerry's 'apartheid' comment

http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/1.587840

The Anti-Defamation League said on Monday it was "disappointed" by remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who cautioned that Israel risks becoming an apartheid state if a two-state solution isn’t agreed upon in the near future.

"It is startling and deeply disappointing that a diplomat so knowledgeable and experienced about democratic Israel chose to use such an inaccurate and incendiary term," wrote ADL National Director Abe Foxman in a statement.

According to Foxman, while the ADL appreciates Kerry's commitment to a peaceful solution in the Middle East, his comments "used the repugnant language of Israel's adversaries and accusers" and were "undiplomatic, unwise and unfair."

"Such references," wrote Foxman, "are not seen as expressions of friendship and support."

Sounds like somebody will be jonesing for Kerry's replacement as SoS.

2. "Risks becoming"?

Sounds like Kerry found a way to tick off all sides. I can't imagine Palestinians are as worried about what they 'risk becoming' as opposed to the oppression they currently already live under.

4. State Department Explains John Kerry’s ‘Apartheid’ Comment Amid Backlash
Mon Apr 28, 2014, 09:45 PM
Apr 2014

Speaking to a private audience about the Middle East peace process, Secretary of State John Kerry did what for many Israel supporters is the unthinkable and used the A-word: apartheid.

“A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class citizens — or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state,” Kerry said Friday in remarks originally reported by the Daily Beast.

For many Jewish groups, the suggestion that Israel is, or even could be, carrying out the systematic oppression and discrimination of Palestinians living within its borders is anathema — despite the fact that major Israeli officials, including Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, have acknowledged the risk that it could become an apartheid state.

Kerry’s comments also come at a particularly sensitive time in the Middle East, as the deadline for the current round of nine-month peace talks is Tuesday, with no sign that negotiations will be extended.

5. John Kerry apologises for Israel 'apartheid' remarks

US secretary of state sparked outcry when he said country risked becoming an 'apartheid' state without a peace deal

The US secretary of state, John Kerry, has apologised for warning that Israel risked becoming an "apartheid state" if it did not reach a peace deal with the Palestinians, following a barrage of criticism in America.

In a statement, Kerry hit back at what he described as "partisan political" attacks against him, while stating that in retrospect he would have chosen a different word.

He said that apartheid was "a word best left out of the debate [in the US]" despite the fact that there have been similar warnings from senior Israeli politicians.

Kerry insisted his remarks were only an expression of his firm belief that a two-state solution was the only way to end the long-running conflict.

10. He just seems too quick to reverse himself at the slightest hint of whining.

Imagine if Kerry actually spoke the cold hard truth for once? If he did there would be fatwas issued for his removal as SoS from Tel Aviv.

I just have the once bitten twice shy mindset where for some godawful reason to actually say anything remotely accurate about Israeli brings out the mashing of teeth and renting of garments.

Let me be more clear, I am not suggesting this translates to US policy that would
not continue to favor Israel. Yet it is a change, and it has its purpose, if Abbas is
smart, he can capitalize on it in many ways.

The shitstorm that followed was anticipated and dealt with accordingly.

Wonder if JK would consider throwing HIS hat into the ring come 2016?
