Patient suffering from a fractured rib told to get treated in Gaza; incident among string of anti-Semitic incidents in Belgium.
ANTWERP, Belgium A Belgian physician who refused to treat a Jewish woman with a fractured rib suggested she visit Gaza to get rid of the pain.
The physician made the remark on Wednesday while manning a medical hotline in Flanders, Belgiums Flemish region, whose capital, Antwerp, has a sizeable Orthodox Jewish population, the local Jewish monthly Joods Actueel reported Thursday.
The woman, Bertha Klein, had her son, who is American, call the hotline at 11 p.m.
Im not coming, the doctor reportedly told the son and hung up. When the son called again, the doctor said: Send her to Gaza for a few hours, then shell get rid of the pain. According to Joods Actueel, the doctor confirmed the exchange, saying he had an emotional reaction.

(14,851 posts)Joods Actueel editor-in-chief Michael Freilich said the incident is particularly alarming because it comes amid a string of recent incidents which involved boycotts against Jews in Belgium since the start of Israels attack on Hamas in Gaza on July 8.
Since then, an Orthodox Jewish woman was refused service at a clothes store in Antwerp, and police removed a sign in French and Turkish from a café near Liege which said dogs were allowed but Zionists and Jews were not.

(1,417 posts)In WW2 Britain, all Germans were interned.....even some German Jews who had sought refuge from the Nazis.
Conflict does that to people...They become irrational and lump everyone into the same classification whether 'English' because of English football holigans, or 'Irish' because of the IRA.
I suggest you grow up and realise the world's population is not perfect.

(14,851 posts)I don't think lying back enjoying and accepting AntiSemitism is ever a solution.
If that's the case I will never grow up no matter if anyone minimized excused or justify's antisemitism , Jews don't do this.

(1,417 posts)My point is that there will always be extremists who are prepared to abuse a whole class of people simply because some of that class are involved in a murderous conflict. This applies to all races/nationalities including the right-wing Israeli abuse of Arabs.
Instead of posting every anti-Semitic article you can find, wouldnt it be better to work for the elimination of ALL racial/nationalistic abuse? Most of the world condemns anti-Semitism including just about everyone on DU......Do you really need to constantly remind DU members that there are extremists in the world?

(6,068 posts)it's the fact that you clearly regard these incidents as more important and urgent than the deaths of civilians in Gaza.

Why does what I post affect anyone else unless it's something they prefer not be seen or illuminated?

(5,397 posts)Was actually fighting the nazis. Belgium is not at war with Israel last time I checked.
But your post is quite disgusting. It excuses such incidents like anti arab violence post 9/11 and the burning of an Arab by settlers recently.

"But your post is quite disgusting. It excuses such incidents like anti arab violence post 9/11 and the burning of an Arab by settlers recently. "I was pointing out that there will always be extremists of all colours and there is little point in searching out every anti-semitic article you can find, and posting it on DU. As for excusing the burning of an Arab by settlers.......Well, the posting of anti-semitic articles is much more likely to encourage retaliation by right-wing Israelis than my general denunciation of extremism.
Can you imagine someone on "Mums net" posting every news item they can find on paedaphilia?

(58,724 posts)Speaking to her son, Hershy Taffel, the doctor reportedly said: Send her to Gaza for a few hours, then shell get rid of the pain.
Taffel said he believed the physician knew he and his mother are Jewish but the doctor in question told the De Morgen daily: I did something stupid, but I did not know the patient was Jewish or I would have never mentioned Gaza.
He had been watching footage of Gaza before Taffel called, he said, and was feeling emotional.
The report did not say how the doctors emotional reaction to the Gaza fighting would otherwise explain his refusal to treat Klein.

Fascinating.

(6,068 posts)I am sure that they would be aghast at being occasionally refused service by an intemperate doctor.
You often say that one should not compare the Palestinians plight with the holocaust. That is appropriate and fair. However, you should equally not try to compare these sorts of incidents to the death and suffering endured by the gazans today. The two things are not equal in gravity or importance.
