(4,151 posts)UPDATE: A 72-hour ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was called off a mere two hours after it began at 8 a.m. Friday morning. Code Red sirens rang out in southern Israel at about 10 a.m., just as Palestinian media reports of Israeli artillery fire began to surface. Mortar shells were reportedly fired from within Gaza landed near the border with Israel. Palestinian medical sources reported that at least 40 Gaza residents were killed and dozens of others wounded by subsequent Israeli artillery fire that targeted southern Gaza.
The Times of Israel reported that the Israeli army fears an Israeli soldier may have been kidnapped near Rafah this morning. Extensive searches are being conducted to resolve the situation.

(1,417 posts)What is known by all?.........In most cease-fires there is some allowance made for the occasional breaking of the cease-fire....Even assuming Hamas did break the cease-fire on one or even a few occasions, Israel had nothing to lose by holding its fire for several hours to give peace a chance.
Instead it immediately retaliated in order to make sure the cease-fire would not lead to a negotiated peace deal.....Israel does not want to break its blockade of Gaza.
