Israel bans Muslims from Ibrahimi Mosque

HEBRON (Ma'an) -- The Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron will be closed to Muslim worshipers on Thursday and Friday, an official at the mosque told Ma'an Sunday.

Hijazi Abu Sneina told Ma'an the mosque would be open to Israeli settlers during the two days of Rosh Hashanah, or Jewish New Year, but closed to Muslims.

The Ibrahimi Mosque, believed to be the burial place of the prophet Abraham, is located in central Hebron, a frequent site of tensions due to the presence of 500 Israeli settlers in the Old City.

A 1997 agreement split Hebron into areas of Palestinian and Israeli control.

From the article, it is "...believed to be the burial place of the prophet Abraham"

Abraham being the father of Judaism.

It was built before Islam existed.

Later, the Muslim Marmeluks conquered the area, declared the structure a mosque, and forbade Jews from entering it.

Jews were banned from the site for 700 years.

This was finally lifted in 1967, though there are portions of the site that are still off-limits to Jews.

It is the second most sacred site for observant Jews after the Temple Mount.

considered one of the Patriarchs of Islam as it was his son Ishmail who is considered the founder of Arabs peoples and Isaac who is considered the founder of Judaism

Abraham was father of other prophets (Ishmail and Isaac) and the grandfather of Prophet Jacob. He is also one of the ancestors of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Abraham is recognized as a great prophet among believers in the monotheistic faiths, such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
