Abbas: Prime Minister Netanyahu, end the occupation, make peace

Addressing students in New York, Palestinian president says will present UN with new timetable for peace talks, AFP reports.

By Haaretz | Sep. 23, 2014 | 4:13 AM |

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said on Monday evening in New York he intends to present a new timetable for peace talks with Israel during his address to world leaders at the United Nations this week.

"I say today to Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu: end the occupation, make peace," Abbas told an audience in New York, AFP reported.

Addressing an audience of student in the Cooper Union hall, Abbas said: "The international community has the responsibility to protect our people, living under the terror of settlers, an occupying army."

"We cannot understand how the Israeli government can be so misguided as to fail to understand that the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza that killed thousands of women and children only sowed more hate," Abbas said, according to AFP.

NEW YORK (AFP) -- Drawing parallels with the US fight for civil rights, President Mahmoud Abbas vowed to present a new timetable for peace talks with Israel when he addresses world leaders this week.

"I say today to Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu: end the occupation, make peace," Abbas told an audience in New York on Monday.

In a passionate address to students in the Cooper Union hall where former US president Abraham Lincoln once called for an end to slavery, Abbas called on the world to "rethink Palestine."

"The international community has the responsibility to protect our people, living under the terror of settlers, an occupying army," Abbas said, winning loud applause from a large audience of mixed religions, including Jewish students.

CAIRO (Ma'an) - Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Zahhar said Tuesday that the Palestinian delegation decided to go ahead with indirect ceasefire talks in Cairo despite deadly violence overnight.

"After consultations between the delegation and Hamas officials both in Gaza and abroad, a decision was taken to go ahead with Cairo talks," Zahhar told Reuters.

His remarks followed reports that the Palestinian delegation in Cairo was considering withdrawing from the talks after Israeli forces killed two Palestinians suspected of kidnapping three Israeli youths in June.

Senior Hamas negotiator Izzat al-Rishaq told AFP the Palestinian team had been headed to the headquarters of the Egyptian intelligence service which mediates the talks when they learned of the Hebron incident and had turned back in protest.

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Indirect talks between Palestinian and Israeli officials will continue in the last week of October, a senior Hamas official said Tuesday.

Izzat al-Rishaq said that talks ended Tuesday and both sides presented their demands to be discussed in the next round of negotiations.

The Palestinian delegation demanded a permanent truce and ceasefire, the rebuilding of an airport and seaport, and the suspension of all sanctions imposed by Israel since June, including the release of rearrested prisoners and Palestinian MPs.

Earlier, Palestinian officials suspended talk for two hours after Israeli forces raided Hebron and killed two Palestinians suspected of orchestrating the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in June.
