Egypt closing off Gaza tightening the siege there, at war against the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. No global outcry because Jews cannot be blamed.
--------------------
The decision was also taken to close the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip. The army and the police will take all necessary measures to tackle the dangers of terrorism and its financing, to preserve the security of the region and protect the lives of citizens, the presidential decree said.
--------------------
Over 15,000 others have been jailed including Morsi and the top leadership of his Muslim Brotherhood, and more than 200 sentenced to death in speedy trials. Relations between Egypt and Gazas rulers Hamas, an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, soured considerably after the ouster.

(25,699 posts)But then I've seen the sort of slaughter you call "self-defense," too so I guess there's no great surprise there
Personally I find John Kerry's new habit of scampering around Cairo, hand-in-hand with that repugnant butcher Fatah al-Sissi to be, currently, probably the most repugnant example of the moral vacuity of US foreign policy.
How about you? Do you actually have a problem with al-sissi's policies and actions?

...due to attacks from the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.
That's rich coming from someone like yourself who supported Hamas' rocket attacks on civilians and hundreds of Palestinians dying, so long as Israel later capitulated to Hamas demands. 2000 lives would have been worth it to you had Israel caved to Hamas' demands.
I don't get American foreign policy either. Outside of Egypt, America is working with Turkey and Qatar in order to fight ISIL. Those 2 countries support ISIL. I'm baffled...
He's a tyrant, no better or worse than any of the other dictators in that area. He's preferred over the Jihadis, however, because as bad as he is they're worse.

(25,699 posts)When Sisi launched his coup, he started this "war' against the Muslim brotherhood by, you know, massacring thousands of Egyptians, two thousand in Cairo alone, imprisoning tens of thousands, sentencing seven hundred of those prisoners to death in mass trials where the defendants were not present.
According to Sisi, all of them were "Muslim Brotherhood Terrorists." Sort of like how according to Vladimir Putin, all of the Ukranians killed and all of hte russians arrested are "terrorists." sort of like hoe the three hundred thousand Indonesians Suharto slaughtered and tossed in pits were "communists" and the three million kileld by the Khmer Rouge were "counter-revolutionaries." One maybe shouldn't be so trusting of mass-murdering tyrannical dictators who seize power in violent coups.
So, are those guys in the Sinai Muslim Brotherhood? Maybe some are. But probably they aren't, since they were shooting at Egyptians when Morsi was president, too. Remember back in 2012, when Morsi tried to send the Egyptian military into Sinai to deal with those guys?
So, no, you have no actual problem with what he's doing?

(90,061 posts)It is indeed a war, the Jihadis are in the Sinai, and Libya, and Mali, and Yemen. Iran seems to be in Yemen now too. But they have been giving al Sisi a bloody nose in the Sinai lately and one group shot some Israeli soldiers.
I also find our policies in the region confused, at best, and agree about al Sisi. He (al Sisi) might come to think the MB is not so bad one of these days though.
