Official: Unilateral Israeli actions will lead to 'explosion'

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Palestinian officials strongly condemned Israel on Monday after it announced plans for 1,000 new settler homes in East Jerusalem.

Jibril Rajoub, a senior member of Fatah, warned of violent consequences likely to follow the latest settlement plans.

"Such unilateral acts will lead to an explosion," he told a gathering of foreign journalists in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

"If he wants to keep pushing us all into a vicious circle of bloodshed and killing he must draw the right conclusion from what happened in Gaza," Rajoub added.

1. Netanyahu: Israel has every right to build in Jerusalem

At opening of Knesset winter session, prime minister says anti-Israel sentiments not caused by construction in capital.

Prime Minister Netanyahu opened the Knesset's winter session on Monday with a wide-ranging speech emphasizing the country's security concerns and Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem.

"Israel has every right to build in Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem," he said, but stressed that the "violence against us is not the result of construction in Jerusalem."

The prime minister reiterated that terrorism does not come from Jerusalem construction it "comes from the desire of our enemies for us not to be here at all."

"The Palestinians demand the establishment of a Palestinian state without peace and without security. They demand a withdrawal, the right of return and a division of Jerusalem. They refuse to accept the elementary condition for peace between two nations – mutual recognition," Netanyahu said.

The prime minister further stated that "the Palestinians must have a desire for peace as well, and unfortunately I see no such desire."

2. EU seeks clarification on new settlement construction

The EU said Monday it was seeking Israeli clarification of reports it planned to build another 1,000 homes in annexed east Jerusalem, voicing new concern about the peace process. If the reports are confirmed, "it will call once again into serious question Israel's commitment to a negotiated solution with the Palestinians," a spokeswoman for EU foreign affairs head Catherine Ashton said.

The European Union could only "condemn such an ill-judged and ill-timed decision" if the plans went ahead, spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said.

got it.

Either there are negotiations or there are not. I personally think both sides should stop unilateral actions.

And it would also ensure the continued unity of Jerusalem.”

snip* refused to discuss in detail where a unilateral border should be drawn if Israel were to withdraw from the mostly Palestinian areas of the West Bank. Nor would he specify what exactly would happen to Jewish settlers who would find themselves on the Palestinian side of such a line. More interested in promoting a theoretical discussion than in issuing concrete policy recommendations, Oren said he had chewed over his ideas with individuals from “various points on the Israeli political spectrum” and with foreign officials.
