http://mondoweiss.net/2014/11/israeli-occupation-jerusalemSubsequent attacks by Palestinians culminated last week in a shooting and stabbing spree by two cousins at a synagogue that killed four Jews and an Israeli policeman. In this atmosphere, both sides have warned that the political conflict is mutating into a religious one.
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, cautioned that Israels intensified efforts to extend its control over the Al Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalems Old City, including by imposing severe restrictions on Muslim worship, risked plunging the region into a detrimental religious war.
Yoram Cohen, the head of Israels Shin Bet intelligence service, concurred. He warned last week that Israel was stoking religious discord by encouraging Jews to pray at the site over rabbinical objections.

(35,350 posts)For many of the actors involved, it's been a religious conflict for decades, if not a century. It's just that those who are secular have had to overlook this to make the entire conflict fit their narrative (handling a variety of narratives is tricky).
I lack a word for the "religionization" of society (and, yes, I reject that one). I guess I'll go with the specific "Islamicization", since it's not so much a new Israeli phenomenon as an increasing Palestinian one.

(23,730 posts)(seizing the Mosque) over the objections of even the same religion's interpreters and transmitters; so in this process you have the state acting outright blasphemously, the state making itself the supreme theologist, *and* the state turning religion into a marker of identity (on its own terms)
