Israeli Knesset Speaker defends desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque

https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/news/middle-east/15503-israeli-knesset-speaker-defends-desecration-of-al-aqsa-mosque

Speaker of the Israeli Knesset Yuli Edelstein yesterday defended the repeated desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli settlers.

In a letter to the Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch, Edelstein said Jews ascending Al-Aqsa were not creating provocations and that the holy site has merely been used as an excuse for terrorist attacks.

On Tuesday, Police Inspector-General Yohanan Danino said it was a mistake to allow Members of the Knesset to go up to Al-Aqsa, especially legislators who support changing the status quo, as this increases tensions in the region.

"Their behaviour could endanger the public and its security and I cannot permit it," he said.

Just the presence of Jews in this location (which happens to be one of the holiest sites in Judaism) constitutes "desecration" worthy of committing terrorist attacks (i.e. killing actual people) in response.

And probably would be a non story if praying was permitted .

Even that sentence I wrote seems bizarre in 2014.

They should take note of what causes the biggest reaction among Palestinians (and indeed among Muslims worldwide) with respect to Israel.

in the Muslim religion. I understand its importance to the Jewish religion, but what precisely happened there that makes it a Muslim holy site?

to the presence of Jews as "desecration". This is a misuse of language. There are ways to make the argument that aren't so repulsive.
