David Brooks says ‘people from around the world’ can serve in Israeli military

http://mondoweiss.net/2015/01/around-israeli-military

Months after New York Times columnist David Brooks told the Aspen Institute that his son is serving in the Israeli army and a controversy erupted over whether the Times should have disclosed this fact to its readers (the Times public editor said it should have; Brooks is a neoconservative who pushed the Iraq war), Brooks has told his readers about his son’s service. The disclosure is swaddled in parentheses deep in a column about Benjamin Netanyahu:

I’m visiting Israel for the 18th or 19th time (my son is currently a member of the Lone Soldiers Program, which allows people from around the world to serve in the Israeli military). I asked a couple of smart Israelis what their coming elections are about.

People from around the world?

From the Israeli Defense Forces Info site, “How to Enlist”:

In order to join the IDF, you must have the right to make Aliyah. This means that you must have at least one Jewish grandparent. If you are not Jewish, and would like to enlist into the IDF, you must convert before making Aliyah or volunteer through Mahal

My bad. I was referring to what Brooks was saying, and not the comment at the end. R. Daneel Olivaw Jan 2015 #4

I'm sure this question comes up a lot.

Or, maybe not lie so much as inaccuracy - since apparently indeed people from all over the world can sign up... so long as they are Jews?

This is probably much more of a disappointment for American fundamentalist Christians and right-wingers such as Adam Everett Livix. Which isn't really a bad thing come to think of it. But it's still inaccurate from Books.

'Course. Who ever expects accuracy from David Brooks in the first place?

Apparently conversion or something else works, too. But mostly those with at least one Jewish female ancestor in the last couple of generations.

Then there's this--which I can't verify because the computer I'm using blocks anything .ru :

http://informator.lg.ua/?p=58513
Which says, paraphrased, that according to the "Official Legal Information Internet Portal" for the RF (Army?) Putin signed an order allowing citizens of other countries to be contract soldiers (that's the kind the US has) if they're not under court sentence and speak Russian, the "state" language.

It adds as kind of codicil that Russia months back granted "active military status" to Russian fighters in in E Ukraine.

People from around the world can serve in the Israeli army without enlisting. In fact, the Lone Soldiers program that David Brooks mentions is mainly compromised of volunteers who are not enlisted in the army.

There are a few different volunteer organizations for people (usually Jewish people) from other countries who want to serve in the Israeli army in some capacity.

Sar-EL, for instance, is open to people of all faiths.

Is it a problem that Palestinian-Americans can't join the Israeli army?

Seems like an odd thing for the folks at Mondoweiss to be concerned about as I cannot imagine this situation comes up very often.
