eta as to the Tal Law I would think that everyone should be required to do at least civil service and under that heading perhaps Yeshiva study could seen as service preserving Israel's Jewish heritage, could be a compromise of sorts

I'd like the person who posted the article to express their opinion on the subject, if they have one, instead of evading the question altogether.

none having to do it that said there should be a choice open to all between military and civil service with the benefits of doing either the same, that being said there is a question will Israeli Jews accept it or how well will it be accepted if Israeli Arabs start choosing military service over civil service in large numbers?

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Ehud Barak is planning to submit a conscription bill which will require haredim to perform some sort of national service for one year. Independence faction chairman MK Einat Wilf is set to submit a similar bill to the Ministerial Committee on Legislative Affairs.

Barak's bill aims to replace the Tal Law and make the IDF the sole authority on army enlistment. All those who are not recruited will be referred to national/civil service for one year.

According to the bill, the IDF will be able to choose who to recruit, and the defense minister will issue exemptions. The civil service head will be able to exempt no more than 10% of eligible applicants – 400 per year.

I would ask your opinion of Barak's proposal here, but, seeing as you are not an Israel citizen, I guess it wouldn't matter?

JERUSALEM, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday called for changing an exemption law which allows yeshiva (Jewish religious seminary) students to indefinitely defer enlistment in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

"The division of the burden (of reserve duty) must change; what was will no longer be," Netanyahu told representatives of "Ma'ahal Hafreirim" ("Camp Chump&quot protest group, who are demanding the state amend the "Tal Law" and add the students to the IDF's ranks.

The groundswell of support for changing the law comes in the wake of a Supreme Court decision in February which ruled that the decade-old legislation was unconstitutional.

"In the last few months, I am aware that there are many opportunists who voted for extending the Tal Law -- I'm not among them," Netanyahu said, adding, "the Tal Law will be replaced with one that is more equal and just, and I will bring it to the fore."
