Netanyahu: speech to US Congress about 'the very survival of my country'

Dan Roberts in Washington
Tuesday 10 February 2015 21.54 GMT

The diplomatic stand-off between Binyamin Netanyahu and US Democrats worsened on Tuesday as more congressmen threatened to boycott a speech by the Israeli prime minister that he claimed was about “the very survival of my country”.

Netanyahu repeatedly defended his decision to accept an invitation from Republican leaders to address a joint session of Congress that the White House has called a partisan breach of protocol.

“I am going to the United States not because I seek a confrontation with the President, but to speak up for very survival of my country,” said the prime minister in of one several English-language tweets seemingly aimed directly at the US public.

“I intend to speak in the US Congress because Congress might have an important role on a nuclear deal with Iran,” he added, receiving over 4,000 retweets after asking followers if they supported his “determination” to speak in Congress.

What a f**king Drama Queen!!!

All this time and now he's concerned about the "survival" of his country? His only interest is to convince the warmongers to piss on any diplomatic solution that might be reached with Iran...and to maybe get the US involved in an armed altercation.

2. I don't believe him. I think they would be safer with a new PM. Maybe Obama should go to the Knesset

Netanyahu is an idiot that hopefully loses the next election but your accusations agains Israel are absurd and saying they "offensive " is being polite.

No, I think ISIS is a serious threat to Israel and all of the Levant.

created a political vacuum. Destroying Iran will not improve the situation. ISIS is threatening all of Israel's border states.

14. Netanyahu didn't drag anyone into Iraq; he doesn't have that amount of power

Not only does Israel not have that degree of power, but Netanyahu was not in fact PM in 2003!

He collaborates with the American Right, to everyone's detriment, but is not responsible for their very existence.

7. If he actually believes what he's saying, then why doesn't he attack Iran now?

Why does he expect the US to spill more American blood and burn our treasury in yet another ill conceived ME war? Israel has a very well equipped and experienced military and there is nothing to prevent them from launching the same war they seem so eager for us to start.

11. The Israel Lobby Shows Its Clout February 2, 2015
Wed Feb 11, 2015, 11:59 AM

House Speaker Boehner’s unprecedented invitation to give Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu a platform of a joint session of Congress to undercut President Obama’s foreign policy is just the latest example of how much power the Israel lobby wields, as Gareth Porter explains.

By Gareth Porter

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu’s acceptance of an invitation to speak to the U.S. Congress on March 3, two weeks before the Israeli election and without any consultation with the White House, is aimed at advancing both Netanyahu’s re-election and the proposed new set of sanctions against Iran now before the Congress.

For many months, pro-Israeli legislators and lobbyists have been threatening new sanctions on Iran while negotiations are still going on. Despite the argument that the sanctions legislation is meant to strengthen the U.S. negotiating hand, the real purpose of the proponents of sanctions has always been to ensure that no nuclear agreement can be reached.

Those proponents take their cues from Netanyahu, and that has been Netanyahu’s openly proclaimed aim ever since the negotiations with the Rouhani government of Iran began. Netanyahu has often insisted that Israel will not accept an agreement that allows Iran to retain any enrichment capability.

The Obama administration has made it clear that it would veto new sanctions legislation, arguing that it would leave the United States with no options except the threat of war. That argument prevailed in the Senate earlier, and the administration may well be able to use it again to defeat the Israeli effort to sabotage the negotiations through sanctions legislation. But there are more battles to come.
