Bethlehem runners hit the wall

Saturday, 28 March 2015

Some 3,200 international and Palestinian runners took to the streets of Bethlehem yesterday to highlight the Right to Movement campaign.

The participants ran 10k, half and full marathons in the sunny Palestinian city along the Separation Wall to showcase how limited Palestinians are in the West Bank.

So small is the area in Bethlehem that runners were unable to complete a full marathon across the city, instead they were forced to complete two laps around the same route.

Participants ran past the Wall in Bethlehem and into Aida refugee camp, stopping for pictures and raising the Palestinian flag along the way.

Around 3000 Palestinian, Arab and foreign athletes ran along Israel's controversial separation barrier as they took part in the Third Palestine Marathon in the West Bank town of Bethlehem Friday.

Held under the auspices of the Palestine Olympic Committee and the “Right to Movement” collective, the event included a full marathon through the streets of Bethlehem as well as a half-marathon and 10 kilometer race.

Nader al-Masri from Gaza was the winner of the full marathon.

Israel permitted some 46 athletes from Gaza to enter the West Bank to partake in the marathon, easing its policy of strict separation between the two Palestinian territories, according to The Times of Israel.
