Toles Rant:This debate seems ancient already

By Tom Toles
Gays are just like you and me. Except you and me are not alike. End of story. Gays are different, just the same way everybody is different. Who knew?

Nobody knew. Because gays were hiding. Why were they hiding? Because we were living in the olden days when we could get away with naked persecution, so to speak. People didn’t want to think about gay people having sex. Well, guess what? Most people don’t want to think about YOU having sex either. They didn’t make that into a rule that you can’t get married. Gays decided that they didn’t want to hide anymore and then we all got to see what non-hiding gays AMONGST US would be like. Results in. They are people! Is there anyone left who doesn’t know an openly gay person?

And?

It’s all over but the shouting, but boy are we good at shouting. Oh my God how we will hear the wailing and lamentations about yet ANOTHER rule in the Bible turning out to be anachronistic. Did we HAVE to stop stoning non-virgins to death? Jeepers, where IS our moral rigor these days? And then it will fade away along with all the other awkward biblical ideas that clergy routinely skate around. The evils of money, say. But meanwhile, in this ongoing election season, we’ll see if the conservatives have found a mileage-worthy ‘gotcha’ on a president for saying something that will soon enough be a universal opinion. The future will win, but maybe not by November.

At least, until I started fornicating around town. Then I just kinda glad.
