Boy Scouts of America says it has no plans to ease its ban on gay leaders after receiving an online petition urging a reversal from the advocacy group Change.org.
Robert Mazzuca, chief executive of the Scouts at their Dallas-area headquarters, said Wednesday the resolution was referred to a committee for review after he received it last week. "We have no plans at the moment to make any changes," Mazzuca said in a phone interview. He said similar resolutions have been handled the same way in the past.
The resolution was submitted to Mazzuca and other Scout officials at the group's annual national meeting in Orlando.
Boy Scouts spokesman Deron Smith said the group agreed to meet privately with Change.org's representatives and to receive the petition "as a courtesy" for those seeking the policy change.

Well that was short lived. Very short lived.

Again, this is a Mormon thing. Too many Mormons have leadership positions in the Boy Scouts. At least this is what he says, and so do some others he knows who would like to change this policy, and the policy toward atheists.

(145,321 posts)The Mormons use scouting as their youth program and account for a disproportionate number of scouts. When the Dale case (the SCOTUS case on gays in scouting), the LDS church announced that they would form their own youth group if scouting had to accept gays. BSA is still afraid of losing the LDS units who make up a decent percentage of scout units.

(30,745 posts)but one of the strongest sponsors was gay. He was someone on the council. He made sure the troop had a place to meet. He had to approve some paperwork, and okay my son's Eagle Scout project before we could proceed with that, and the court of honor.
Everyone in town knows the man is gay, and it is no big deal.

(145,321 posts)The BSA knows that its policy is wrong but cannot change it due to the Mormons. Members of the LDS faith make up less than 5% of the population but account for 15% to 20% of scout membership. The LDS church has threatened to form their own youth group if BSA changes its policy. The BSA has responded by a very extreme form of "don't ask, don't tell" where may units have gay leaders and no one cares so long as these leaders do not wear their scout uniform to a gay pride event.
My District has several gay leaders and no one cares. Two of these leaders were at my training to be a scout leader a long time ago.
There are a large number of leaders and people inside BSA who want to change this policy. It is going to take time.
