Homosexual man from Nablus, living in Tel Aviv, pleads for asylum on the grounds of well-founded fear of persecution
A gay Palestinian man appealed to the High Court of Justice on Thursday to overturn the Interior Ministrys decision to refuse him residency status, saying he risks death if he returns to the West Bank.
The Muslim resident of Nablus claimed that deportation to the Palestinian territories would result in his detention and torture by the Palestinian security forces and persecution by his family because of his sexual orientation.
His petition testified that Palestinian police had arrested, tortured and severely beaten him because he is openly gay. Most members of his family have disowned him, and those who havent have warned him by phone to never come home, he stated.

Behind the Aegis
(53,957 posts)Most nations don't really recognize homosexuality as a group under diress. Though, technically, they are supposed to do so. Given the added situation of the ongoing conflict in this situation, the stress is even more a problem. If he is sent back to the West Bank, he will likely be discriminated against because he is gay, but there is also the added pressure that he may be accused of being an Israeli "spy."
I hope he is granted asylum, and if not, that one of the GLBT groups in Israel will get him to another location, other than the West Bank.

(29,503 posts)not to the extent nor with the frequency that it happens in Palestine. Nor does it happen here with the implicit approval of law enforcement authorities, as it does happen frequently there.
And clearly, if things were as bad here as there, nobody would be applying for asylum.
