Gay rights group forming in Danville

On May 8, the people of North Carolina voted in favor of the same-sex marriage amendment, defining marriage in the state constitution between one man and one woman and banning other types of civil unions.

For Danville resident Dawn Witter it was the last straw.

“I just wanted to do something,” said Witter. “I wanted to join something and when I went looking for a group I couldn’t find one.”

Witter has always been a supporter of gay rights. But when she went looking for a support group in the region and couldn’t find one, she decided to start her own. Now she is currently developing a Danville Chapter for PFLAG – a national support group for Parents, Friends, Families and Allies of the Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
