The Country's Gay Secrets (things you probably didn't learn in school)

This Fourth of July, as you're munching on hot dogs, launching fireworks and wondering if you took it just a little too far with your flag-themed outfit, take a break to appreciate this collection of gay secrets from the Land of the Free's history.

From Abraham Lincoln's bed fellows to marine man-love, there's plenty in America's past to make homophobes faint from something other than too much beer this Independence Day.

I realize this is a little late for the 4th celebrations, but it's here for next year.

They've been pointing up von Steuben's homosexuality, as in, "Yeah he was gay but there would be a USA! USA! without him". They've mentioned Lincoln's manloves but the evidence seems a bit thin yet (as in, "probably was but we don't have evidence like we do about von Steuben&quot .

A few years back I read several works about gays in the military on both sides of the civil war. Very interesting stuff.
