At the meeting yesterday a shareholder questioned the profitability of Starbucks marriage equality stance by bringing up a boycott being levied against the coffee company by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a group adamantly opposed to equal marriage rights.
The shareholder referred to NOMs boycott, and said: In the first full quarter after this boycott was announced, our sales and our earringsshall we say politelywere a bit disappointing.
CEO Howard Schultz replied that not every decision is an economic decision, and went on to suggest that if shareholders thought their return was not strong enough in the face of opposition for supporting such issues, they could sell their shares.
Mr Schultz said: If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38% you got last year, its a free country. You can sell your shares of Starbucks and buy shares in another company.

Lots of Starbucks business is young adults, including the LGBT community.
I'd suggest the less than stellar profits for one quarter have more to do with winter expenses, increased gasoline costs, or unemployment in some areas, versus the strength of the N O M boycott. N O M folks, to me, don't look like the Starbucks regulars.

(261 posts)I'm sorry, not that fussy about my coffee, and prefer to make my own, or drink something else when out, later in the day, something that costs about the same but gives me a different buzz.

(246 posts)errands that latté helps me get through my to-do list. However when I get home and before my evening meal I enjoy a couple of ounces straight-up of The Glenlivit ... yummy indeed!
I forgot to mention that I liked your response to the original post/thread.

That said, I drink a LOT of coffee (so does my family) and I buy exclusively Starbucks brand ground coffee in the grocery store. My favorite is "Dark Expresso Roast (bold and caramelly - tastes just like Dutch coffee which I LOVE ).
