Meet the lesbian who heckled Michelle Obama

A lesbian activist had a testy exchange with first lady Michelle Obama at a fundraiser on Wednesday evening over a much sought-after LGBT non-discrimination executive order, leading to the ejection of the activist from the event.

Ellen Sturtz, a 56-year-old D.C.-based activist affiliated with the grassroots LGBT group GetEQUAL, had the exchange with the first lady — which involved not just the executive order, but the Employment Non-Discrimination Act — at a Democratic National Committee fundraising event in D.C.

“I think she was upset by the interruption, no doubt,” Sturtz said. “But I really didn’t feel like there was a lot of anger or felt like I was in danger at all. Even though she was pretty — I would like to say assertive — but obviously it was pretty aggressive.”

According to Sturtz, the exchange began when Michelle Obama began talking about children without delving too much into LGBT issues beforehand. Sturtz said she shouted out to the first lady something about the importance of LGBT children, and Michelle Obama wasn’t happy.

I responded to this thread that popped up on the Latest Threads page. I try to make it a point to avoid topic specific forums when my view on a specific thread is contrary to theirs.

My intent was not to disrupt.

I'm not a fan of people who have a problem with people speaking out for equality.

So I guess we are even.

Her concerns need to be heard, and her voice should not be silenced. But, I just don't like this trend that every speech needs to be disrupted by someone shouting from the crowd.

That says it all. Nothing more need be added to that comment. Until that sinks in to the thick headed who do not understand how much harder you have to live than the rest of us do it will not change. I know you are not going to give up Neither will I.

I want to feel good about having rights (even thought they seem to be flying away from all of us) that we all share. I have never enjoyed being in the position I am in with more. It sucks though not nearly as badly as it does from your angle. Together, we are in the for all time.

Perhaps the "Etiquette" of power is a better term. A method of excluding the "Rude" working class, who don't know how to treat their betters.

of "manners." I personally believe the First Lady was ungracious when confronted. In GD, this scenario was outlined as a challenge to Ellen Sturz's defenders: an LGBT speaker being interrupted by an advocate for inner city children. In such a hypothetical scenario, I would hope that any LGBT person or LGBT advocate would have the presence of mind to understand that we're all in this together and respond in kind. I am extremely disappointed that our first lady -- a public figure raising money for the Democratic party -- let her temper get away from her and pissed away an opportunity to engage with the public on behalf of the oppressed among us.

A woman who is discriminated against with failing hope that that equality will happen protests the FLOTUS as she raises money for the only party even slightly likely to do the right thing.

She should what? Go home and wait with baited breath for someone (s) who has shown little regard for LGBT without extreme pressure to do something about this? Write letters? Emails? Phone calls? When nothing else works this is what we are left with as citizens. I hope this is not a single incident.

about the commonalities of _all_ oppressed Americans. She let her temper (and perhaps her status) get the best of her and pissed away the opportunity.

to fix that. Let's see if she is gracious enough to take it. She says she is an ally, if so she must feel badly about this.

It should never be hard for anyone, no matter what position, to say they bungled something. We all do and most of us can easily admit that and apologize. I hope they do not just let this slide by, especially knowing all the untrue crap that got posted about LGBT being racist. That was not her doing but whoever did that made it so much worse.

It could have been handled better by all. What does annoy me, is the Bus du jour complete with teh list, being brought out again as they sing that tired, old, hateful song.
