DAKAR, Senegal (AP) Senegalese police detained five women accused of violating the country's anti-gay law, highlighting increased pressure on suspected lesbians in the deeply conservative West African nation, an activist group said Tuesday.
The five women were detained early Monday morning during a birthday party at a restaurant in Dakar's Yoff district that has been described in the Senegalese press as a meeting point for gay men and lesbians, said Ndeye Kebe, president of the activist group Women's Smile.
The oldest of the suspects, 31-year-old Sene Dieng, is an assistant director at Women's Smile, the only group in Senegal to advocate for lesbians' rights.
The five women were expected to appear in court Tuesday, though Kebe said they had been unable to afford a lawyer.

Senegal: Justice Minister reverses course on gay rights
in SENEGAL, 11/09/2013
Senegals New Justice Minister Sidiki Kaba has ruled out legalising homosexuality in the country despite previously being a gay rights supporter and activist. Kaba, who was previously the head of the International Federation for Human Rights, told reporters on Friday [Sept. 6] that he had dropped his opposition to the persecution of gay and lesbian people. He said: I am a minister of justice who works in the context of a government and who expresses his views through those of the head of state which apply to all those who serve under him.

(1 post)Senegal has to look at the scientific body of evidence about homosexuals.
Psychiatrists in the following countries (UK, USA, Europe, China, India, Australia, N.Z, Lebanon) have all agreed that homosexuality is NOT a) a disease b) a mental illness c) a perversion
And they have also agreed that
homosexuality CANNOT be changed, therefore, stating that it is NOT A CHOICE.
Senegal can politically pacify its Christian and Muslim believers who go back to homophobic quotes written at a time when starting a fire was done by rubbing two sticks together, or, they can step into the 21 century.

P.S. Senegal has to realize that the United Nations Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms states that no religion or culture has the right to deny human rights particularly in areas of sexual orientation.
