The U.S. hypocrisy over Russia’s anti-gay laws

Controversy over a Russian law that prohibits advocacy of homosexuality threatens to overshadow athletic competition at the upcoming Sochi Olympics. Thoughtful world leaders, including President Obama, have criticized Russia for stigmatizing gay identity.

Many of these critics find it hard to believe that in 2014 a modern industrial government would have this kind of medieval language in its statutory code:

●“Materials adopted by a local school board .?.?. shall .?.?. comply with state law and state board rules .?.?. prohibiting instruction .?.?. in the advocacy of homosexuality.”

●“Propaganda of homosexualism among minors is punishable by an administrative fine.”

Eight U.S. states, and several cities and counties, have some version of what we call “no promo homo” provisions.

doesn't come close to what the Russian FEDERAL GOVERNMENT has done

and the "no promo homo" laws here in the US don't come close to what the Russian laws do

the US isn't perfect but I rather be gay in Utah than in Russia; at least I wouldn't have to worry about the state police coming after me

Because we couldn't get any fonder of Saudi Arabia. Reckon there's going to be any criticism of their policies toward LGBT people on that "fence mending trip"?

Constantly sucking up to SA makes us hypocrites on a wide variety of issues, from our claims to support LGBT rights to claiming we care about women's rights to the absurd notion that we support democracy, unions, or religious freedom.

I don't think we should stop criticizing Russia, I think we should start criticizing all the other countries with anti-LGBT laws and other regressive policies. Even the ones that haven't annoyed us lately.
