Priest clarifies misconceptions on Pope's civil union remarks
By Elise Harris
Vatican City, Mar 7, 2014

(excerpt)
A priest connected with the Vatican press office addressed Pope Francis' recent words on civil unions in an interview, noting that his comments were general and did not imply a change in Church doctrine.

Fr. Rosica, C.S.B., who serves as the English language assistant to Holy See Press Office, observed that “Some journalists have interpreted the Pope's words...to reflect an openness on the part of the Church to civil unions. Others have interpreted his words to be addressing the question of same-sex marriage.”

Giving the original Italian version of the pontiff's words on civil unions, Fr. Rosica provided his own personal translation, highlighting the importance of understanding that “'civil unions'” in Italy refer to people who are married by the state, outside of a religious context.”

Addressing questions from some journalists who have asked whether or not the comments were made in reference to gay civil unions, the priest emphasized that “The Pope did not choose to enter into debates about the delicate matter of gay civil unions.” ....MORE

... are especially unfair to Catholics who support LGBT equality. Unlike some folks, I have no vested interest in validation from the Pope nor do I expect any real change in the Church's attitude towards women and LGBTs. I'm also aware of how this game has been played and so fully expected this outcome, down to some Vatican spokesman who, within a few days, followed up the Pope's remarks to explain that Francis didn't really mean what people thought he did. And 'round it goes. It serves as nothing more than a distraction. I suppose the hope is that folks will only remember what they thought Francis said, which got mega global press, as opposed to a clarification of what he actually meant, delivered by some Vatican minion to be published in the back pages of a few rags. Because this is the outcome I fully expected, this "news" is not the disappointment it must be to Catholic LGBT allies, who I hope at this point will tire of getting their chains yanked.

Probably because I don't want to believe, in my heart of hearts, that this type of PR maneuvering originates from such a point of spite. Even now I think I can be rather naïve in that regard, I guess. But then what do I know? I'm just some neo-corporate shill and "hater".

His opinion doesn't make a damn bit of difference in the grand scheme of things. Those who listen to him, I don't want much to do with. And those who don't, I do. Life goes on.

To paraphrase George Carlin: I have just about as much power as the pope. Just fewer followers.
