Gay marriage group calls foe's legal brief 'downright offensive' in fundraising email: Oregon politics today

Oregon United for Marriage, the group leading the campaign for same-sex marriage in Oregon, this weekend criticized its foe in a legal case, the National Organization for Marriage, as being "downright offensive."

The criticism came in a fundraising appeal from the group supporting gay marriage, which is opposing the National Organization for Marriage's attempt to intervene in a pair of federal lawsuits attempting to overturn Oregon's ban on same-sex marriage.

This is at least the second fundraising appeal from Oregon United based on NOM's attempt last week to intervene in the case. And NOM, on its own website, is also trumpeting its legal filing in Oregon and urging supporters to donate money to help pursue its action.

The fundraising appeal from Oregon United hones in on this sentence from a NOM brief referring to two of the plaintiffs in the case, Ben West and Paul Rummell, who have an adopted 8-year-old son...

NOM has deep ties to the Mormon Church, the Catholic Church hierarchy and right-wing evangelical pastors and other organizations against same-sex marriage. In fact, NOM and the Portland Catholic Archdiocese contributed 83% of the money raised in Maine’s Question 1 battle.
